Only a week to think to the next crazy thing... I must hurry, though! Tongue

Back on topic: the BD playlist files, .mpls, are used for, yep, playlists, sorta m3u files. I wonder if they could be used for .mkv as well; but if it only works with .m2ts, it's still a path that could be followed...

No menus, OK, but at least (for the ones who cares to play it, and not the main movie directly) it's possible to add a video logo, a disclaimer, a trailer, at the beginning and/or at the end, or release a bonus disc with different quality sources (SD, HD, one or more tracks etc.)

Can't remember if EasyBD Lite allows to author a BD with playlists, nor if TSmuxeR can do the same; if so, how.

Speaking of Easy BD Lite... What the hell happened to it? I get an error page when I try download it. I contacted the webmaster via email, waiting for an answer.

It's still available from other download sites, just not necessarily the most recent build.

I generally don't trust other websites though. You never know if they add malaware

I'm sure there is a way to verify authenticity via checksumsWink

Lateral thinking... using a DVD menu to play HD contents... of course not standard, but still possible? (menu and contents on HD, and played by VLC or MPC)

That's basically what MKVs support, at least in theory. You can do what you want by creating a program to make the menu to mux into MKV. Or you can use the already available MP4menu program there's even a GUI for it. There's no guarantee of player compatibility with the menus though, and you lose the MKV features. You can also do it with PGMX which is a modification of the MKV standard, but requires payware to make the menus - and playback is only supported if people use the propriety player (although the files can be played as normal .mkv files if you rename the extension).

I explored various options during the night...

MP4menu: would give a try
PGMX: nice idea, sadly it needs a special player available only for Windows, but, as you wrote, it should always be possible to read the mkv file with other players, with just one audio track
MKV menu: needs LAV or media splitter to work, so quite limited for the moment

I thought also that EVO could contain menu as well, but where to find an authoring program?

Experimented with html5 players (better pure, without flash fallback); can't figure out how to select different audio tracks...

VLC called by javascript: should still find the way to work with commands, and it's limited, too.

Blu-ray is the best option, but even the best software output BDMV folder, which is still not compatible with many hardware players, and have a lot of problems to let the menu work well with software player.

Another solution I thought about is an hardware BD recorder; this, in theory, should output a more compatible disc.

Would BD players even support HTML5?
