[In progress] Event Horizon BD fix
#1
It should be a well known problem, but, to whom is not aware of this, Event Horizon on Blu-ray is stretched vertically - or, rather, squeezed horizontally, I could correct, as it has more image on the sides, in comparison to the old DVD and the LD (SE DVD has the same problem, though). Leaving the height unaltered, obviously the aspect ratio is wrong...

Provisional plan:
  • de-stretch the video, diminishing the height and taking the aspect ratio from 2.35:1 to the best value - that, according to someone, should be around 2.42:1, if not higher
  • regrade it using the old color grading found on LD or first DVD edition as color reference, to get a more colorful version, and, probably, one nearest theatrical version, and get rid of the pink tint problem
  • add eventually a grain plate when needed
  • add the DTS Cinema track
  • add the PCM track from lasedisc, as it seems more punchy and less dry, according to widescreenreview

There is also a useful DVD review which compares four different editions from several regions, that used two different color gradings, but I can't retrieve it... EDIT: here you are: http://sd.caps-a-holic.com/vergleich.php...eichID=121 - thanks to MrBrown!

Wow, that's quite a botched release. Amazing stuff like this gets mass manufactured.

All the home video sound mixes never had the same impact as the cinema audio. It might of been nearly 20 years ago but that film left a bit of an impression on me thanks to the powerful sound mix. When I got the Laserdisc on its original release I cranked the audio up and was disappointed with it.

Only found a comparison between two different US releases and two different German releases.

The old US and old German release seems to be a bit different in color tuning, compared to the newer releases.

Thanks MrBrown, it was that page I was talking about!

Indeed, this was a very nice flick - not a masterpiece, at least in its theatrical edition, but it still deserves a bit more respect.

Bigrob, do you talk about AC3 or PCM track? Well, if this project will be done, don't forget the Cinema DTS track - that probably will leave the laserdisc track useless.

I'd say keep the LD track. It's nice to have for the analog in all of us.

Actually it's PCM, hence digital... Wink

True, it's digital. So, let me "correct" Jetrell Fo's statement:

I'd say keep the LD track. It's nice to have for the nostalgia (of LDs) in all of us.

My first post here! I recently picked up the Blu-ray and noticed the aspect problem right away. It was there on the special edition DVD which I also own (PAL UK version). The correct ratio seems to be ~2.45, against the non anamorphic DVD. There's quite a bit more in either the left, right or both sides of the frame and often a little less on the bottom. Muted colours and dull contrast throughout. What a nasty effort...

It might be useful to check out the FHD trailer included on the Blu-ray (I can share that if needed). Aspect ratio seems correct and the colours really pop; vastly superior to the film presentation.

Personally, I'd love to see this released. I've heard great things about the original mix also.

Cheers
