[In progress] Event Horizon BD fix
#91
Here I am!

Tested a possible UAR version using BD and HDTV; result was good, but sadly in some shots the logo was visible.

So, I decided to give a try to the US DVD, and guess what? That's great! It has more image not only on bottom, but also on both sides. Plus, its color grading, used as color reference. And, there is at least one shot where BD is severely cropped in comparison to DVD:

nice, isn't it? More comparisons:

follow the link to see better which frame parts are added: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/133779

This also explain the stretched aspect ratio... they simply cut the bottom (why?) and resize to a "general" 2.35:1 AR, without calculating the actual one!

I made a lot of tests, and obtained two good versions:

MAIN uses the DVD colors for 95% of the image, and the residual 5% is color matched; while the color is perfect in the first part, it is sometimes off in the small added slice on left; a solution could be to let that slice out, but I'd prefer to avoid that, if the color difference is not that distracting.

SPACE uses a color match; while obviously is less closer than MAIN, it has no color difference in the added slice, plus often the alignment of the BD and DVD are better (especially in space shots, hence the name) - at the cost of half speed, at a whopping 0.2fps! Eek

Maybe the better solution would be to do two encodes, and make an hybrid using the best result for each one; I thought, for the shots where SPACE color is really off (like the first part of the following test clips inside the ship) and where MAIN added slice difference is too noticeable, to crop that slice, and maintain it for the shots where the color difference is absent or not that noticeable.

Test clips
http://www44.zippyshare.com/v/anbIRWAp/file.html - BD (top) vs MAIN (bottom)
http://www44.zippyshare.com/v/0L1x9yXy/file.html - SPACE

Notes: MAIN colors in the first part in the ship are perfectly reproduced, but the color difference in the left slice is noticeable (should I crop it?); then for the rest of the clip, SPACE is better, in particular last part where MAIN image is misaligned.

This looks terrific! With regards to the splices, it doesn't seem like there's an easy solution that isn't even more time intensive. A hybrid is probably the best way, but...it's the workload and render time. It goes without saying that it's ENTIRELY your call. I don't actually mind the small colour shifts in the splices so long as the main frame has the DVD colours.

Well, my opinion is ... I'd like to see a nice release of this from you Andrea because I know we have the cinema DTS track for this film and I believe it is fully sync'd already.

"We" have it, and now it is in sync! Big Grin

Note that, apart obviously the more active LFE channel, also the surround ones are more alive; BD seems to have only more activity on the center channel during the end credits - that is ininfluent...

Top Cinema DTS, bottom TrueHD from BD:

This is a particularly difficult shot, color wise... let's see some examples:

BD
[Image: EH_BD.jpg]

UAR using HDTV - color matching is way off, no image on top
[Image: EH_UAR_HDTV.jpg]

UAR "SPACE" - color matching still off, top and bottom slices retain DVD colors
[Image: EH_UAR_SPACE.jpg]

UAR "MAIN" - good color matching, apart left slice
[Image: EH_UAR_MAIN.jpg]

UAR "MAIN" without left slice - perfect color matching, more image on top and bottom but less on the left in comparison to BD
[Image: EH_UAR_MAIN_DVD_only.jpg]

for this, I'd go with the latter (let's call it MAIN DVD) - even if we'll loose the left slice, we'll earn more image top and bottom, and, most important, a perfect color match.
I randomly picked a lot of frames in different shots, and most of them works very well with the MAIN setting, so I *guess* that only few shots will use the MAIN DVD, along with SPACE for outer space scenes (and few other ones). There may be also some shot that requires UAR using HDTV; even if I don't think so, the script is ready, just in case...

EDIT: SPACE color matching is usually from very good to almost the same as MAIN; the main drawback is that it's painfully slow... still, it could be used, apart for the obvious space scenes, for those shots where MAIN alignment is not perfect - and it happens, sometimes.

So, the previous plan seems right. We'll see!

Note: due to different angles used for DVD and BD masters, there are some shots which contain plain lines that may show tiny distorsions in those lines, where they merge; an example is here (top DVD, middle UAR "MAIN", bottom BD):

So the Blu-ray with corrected geometry from 84 Entertainment is out. 2.535 aspect ratio, which makes sense given how different the framing is from the DVD. Though the bitrate is a hair lower than the last Blu-ray, it's still a very healthy 32Mbps. I've updated the comparisons between the two Blu-rays, the iTunes release, the HDTV release, the PAL non-SE DVD release and the NTSC non-SE DVD release.

On the whole, other than the aspect ratio being off, the original Blu-ray seems to do a better job of maintaining the grain. It's probably still the best source.

Edit: Is there a very slight difference in colour in these shots or is it just me?

I have and enjoy the original bluray release. The grain retention is what caught my eye when I first popped it in and aside from the LD, and the DVD, this is the only version I watch.

Wish I had a laserdisc player! Is a good capture in existence? Curious to see it next to the NTSC DVD.

@markymark: thanks for the new comparisons!

On my phone, I note a very slight color difference indeed. Apart obvious geometric correction (which could be easily achieved by avisynth or any other video editing software), I don't know if it's worth to eventually use this new BD as source.

About laserdisc: IIRC it has the same color grading of one of the DVD versions; audio wise, can't say how much better could be its PCM track, nor if it's closer to the original mix; still, could be an interesting bonus track to add, don't you think?

Hope to restart to work on this project (and all the others) ASAP!
