[Canceled] Batman (1989) - Open Matte (Upscale Project )

Batman - Open Matte (Upscale Project v1.3)

See project origin here: https://fanrestore.com/thread-1071.html

Video:
The open matte DVD upscaled with a combination of super-resolution and nnedi with filters to reduce macro-blocking and edge enhancement/halos. The resulting image was further processed and then re-grained with a real grain best matching the BD version. The video was then color corrected with a 35mm LUT and color matched to some 35mm frames and trailers.

Audio:
1. Dolby Surround PCM 2.0 from the wide screen laserdisc

2. Dolby Digital 5.1 from the open matte DVD.

Well done!

It was on TV few days ago - I think they used an old master, because video was quite soft, and the colors of this upscale remind me a lot their ones...

Looks wonderful! And from a not so lovely source being this is from the ol' flipper disc which is chock full of noise and compression and other early DVD nasties.

So Batman is basically a film noir aka 40s and 50s era crime genre. And as a fan of film noir I recognize that except some technology Batman is basically a film noir superhero movie. Its got the femme fatale, newspaper writer, trenchcoats, revolvers, high contrast filming, etc, etc.

I'm not the first to notice but it gave me an idea. Since this upscale is 4:3, it now more then ever looks like a noir. All it need to be was in black and white. So I removed the color, changed the contrast and black levels and added grain to create this:

I know I might be the only one here who likes noir films but I found it to be a fun experiment and it plays pretty well in b&w.

The b&w Version indeed seems very interesting.
Also seems in the screens, if this really fits well.

Love noir. If Batman '89 is a noir film with an unusually happy ending, then Batman Returns is certainly a German Expressionist film starring Batman.

Interesting to see, as you point out, how the lighting of Burton really captures that aesthetic, once all the color is drained away.

That's a great idea Falcon. Never thought of it that way.

I should of known you would love noir.

I think I might include it as a small mp4. A bonus so to speak

Thanks also Koopa and MrBrown

That's great! Now you should add some spare colors here and there, a la Sin City! Wink
