I noticed a glitchy blurry shot at 1h19'23, the close up of Newt lying down. As if you'd need 3D glasses to see it properly, weird.

Is the audio out of sync? It surely feels that way when i play this in kodi.

Aliens was filmed open matte 1.37:1 and there are some VHS with more pic info top and bottom. Not sure if there were any LD like this, I forgot.

I respectfully disagree. All the prints for sale have had the live action shots hard matte'd like so: Some SFX shots maybe opened up but they are in the minority and don't qualify the film as open matte or something akin to Academy ratio. It would be very odd for the negative and IP to be open and the 35 prints hard matte'd. That's just unneeded extra work. And I looked for an open matte copy for a long time. Going so far as to buy the US VHS, the US 1st gen LD and get the US TV cut from the organ. All are framed down from 1.85. Any additional info at the top and bottom is just overflow that would be covered up in the film gate. It's why you can have a 1.77 HDTV version with info not in the 1.85 BD version. It's just leeway that sadly doesn't make it open matte.

You are right, never noticed before... tried to find out why, but can't find the original avisynth scripts used! Would be OK for the 1.78:1 version, though. It maybe that the prints were hard matte (to avoid problems), but there is/were VHS which were full screen open matte. UK VHS as far as I remember. VFX shots may have been cropped, but live action had more image top and bottom. You know it was shot open matte because not one scan as the same framing.

I would be nice to see this tape but until then Aliens is hard matte'd just like the prints.

I’ve got a number of UK VHS editions that I could screencap if I get the time?

Sure sounds great Bigrob. Maybe we can figure this out.

Never saw a 1.33:1 open matte version, but it's more than possible, knowing the director.
There are also few shots found on the WOWOW version with different framing that, when composed with the BD, lead to an aspect ratio around 1.7:1 (IIRC), that could be a clue. |
