When you buy a BD, DO NOT give away the DVD of the same title!

Because, while the title is the same, probably it is different... sometimes:

• DVD has different cut
  
• DVD has different color grading
  
• DVD has different sound mix
  
• DVD has more audio and/or sub tracks
  
• DVD has extras while BD has not, or less, or different
  

(it could be the same for HD-DVD, Laserdisc etc.)

Luckily I have retained all the DVD even when upgraded to BD, and very few times DVD had exactly the same content of the BD...

One of the best exsamples is "The Devil's Advocate".
The first DVD in USA contained still the uncensored piece of Art in the Office, while every BluRay just got the censored Version.

As being from Germany there are certain DVD releases that differ somway from counterpart BD releases.
Mostly releases from smaller companies tend to use different masters back in DVD age, compared to the more worldwide similar BD Master.

As example, the first VCL German DVD of Terminator 1 (rated FSK18) contained the german mono audio, no english, and an awful bad Image quality, but it came from a theatrical print, without the alteration at the end credits.

Even VHS sometimes contain "special" versions not avaible on BD, DVD or even LD. The german Warner VHS of Cujo contained the old Theatrical Version with the first german dub. For later releases the dub was redone, I think because of license fees, but I may be wrong. The newer dub sounds lame, the voice actor's just worked down the script, and it sounds like a lame, lifeless porn dub. Also, later releases only contained the director's cut. (Or a formerly bootlegged extended cut containing the DC from an US source, with inserted Theatrical Version elements from an VHS copy...)
So, the VHS is still someway remarkable...

Oh, that reminds me - I have a German Blu-ray of the two Thunderbirds movies. I should probably check to see how different it is from the recent UK releases.

This is why is is a good idea to archive everything, as you never know if the new releases will include "old" material.

I'll never part with my DVDs. I have the 2012 Jaws DVD which uses the restored print from the Blu-ray but I prefer the 2005 DVD since 1. it's unedited and still has the wire balancing the buoy in the opening scene, 2. it has more bonus features (they saved most of the bonus features for the BD in 2012) and 3. I'm keen to the mono mix of the film and I find it a bit crisper than the mono track on the 2012 DVD. Same with Terminator. I have the SE DVD by MGM with all the bonus features (much of with is excluded on the BD's) but I also like my old Image Entertainment DVD cause the mono track sounds better on that than the SE DVD. And although they've been heavily criticized and rightly so, I'm glad to still have my GOUT DVD's considering how much they go for these days.

So I took the time to make a comparison between my Apollo 13 DVD and Blu-ray. Looks like the two masters are framed differently, and the astronaut suits are a little blue-ish on the DVD.

I also got a comparison shot of Alan Rickman - God rest his soul - in Sweeney Todd, since I had both the DVD and BD. They're not much different, being released around the same time, but the DVD's a little bluer.

I miss that guy already.

Anyway, I also got a comparison for Singin' in the Rain too. The DVD appears to have more information at the top, and has a sort of blue tint.

I'm guessing that maybe PAL DVDs, at least the ones I have, introduce a blue tint to the image. Would that be a fair assumption?

Update. Theres a second occurrence of digital removal on the Jaws BD. The shot where Quint and Hooper lasso the barrel rope (when Quint says 'Here boy. Give it to me a minute') a sailboat that was in the background was digitally removed. Another reason Im glad I still got my DVD version.
