The best audio source for Seven, in the absence of cinema DTS is most likely laserdisc. I understand Ren Klyce supervised a near field mix for the AC3 on the Criterion laserdisc, don't know if it's the same mix on the New Line disc (I have both)

That might well be the case, but I'm curious to know what's different about the DTS-HD 5.1 on the Alliance BD. It's been asserted that the mix is different on the LD, but the only details that I have seen so far are are in the post on dvdcompare.net, and that refers to differences between an American BD (presumably the NL one with the 7.1) and a Swedish VHS and a UK DVD, rather than the LD/French DVD (though it's possible that they are the same).

OK I understand now, apologies. It seems like the two possible sources for the alliance 5.1 track are the earlier laserdisc track or the remixed 5.1EX 2000 platinum dvd track (minus the surround back channel flag).

^ No apology is necessary. :-) I'm just trying to get things straight myself. If the Platinum DVD was a remix, then it's perfectly possible that the Canadian and Dutch BDs derive their 5.1 tracks from that. (The latter has phase issues but is probably just a messed-up version of the former.)

Just found this on imdb:

"In the Platinum Series DVD released by New Line on 12/19/2000, Mills has a line just as Somerset runs up to him in the climactic scene. The line is supposed to be "What the f***'s he talking about?" Clearly audible on the Criterion laserdisc, this line is obscured on the new DVD because the director, while remastering the sound for the new release, thought that the character should be whispering the line to himself rather than yelling it, as it was on the Criterion laserdisc. Thus, it was altered."

Nice find! That's carried over onto the 5.1 on the BDs, as far as I can tell, which confirms that it's the remix. I'm curious about the other dialog differences that were mentioned on dvdcompare.net. Perhaps they were introduced during remixing too.

Anyone has seen a LD rip of the first Mission Impossible film? According to posts on Blu-ray.com, the mix is the best one ever released and trumps the DVDs and Blu-rays.

I remember we talked about the color grading of Deep Rising, where DE DVD has totally different colors and contrast - it seems a lot cinema-like IMHO: http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=1776&d2...=7&l=0&a=1

I have used the same filters with different settings; if it will turn out that they would fit the whole film, I can think about regrading it...
