I didn't actually know that, good catch. I take it back. Smile

Would for sure be interesting for someone to rip those tracks and sync them, but also a great deal of work I think, since the LD tracks appear to be analog, from what I see on lddb. Which brings up the question whether the VHS tracks may actually be better, if they are HiFi. I for one have no experience with analog LD tracks.

Yes, most of the LDs seem to be analog, which is a shame because the audio on the BDs certainly leaves much to be desired.

On a note, I think they added the exterior engine rumble (which was phased out midway through the first season) to the entire series because they needed that to uniform the remixes, as they probably just used the final mono mixes, taking the dialogue out of those to put in center, by hacking up all the rest to get a dialogue track.

As you may all know, when mixing dialogue, you need a room atmosphere sound, so there there are no holes when people speak, especially if some parts are dubbed. That way you can adjust dialogue volume, without upping or lowering the room sound which stays constant.

It's a dead giveaway they did not have the stems (dialogue on one side, M&E on the other) and did a frankenstein remix.

The Japanese TOS season box sets have digital tracks, but those sets remain pricey to this day. I've long wanted to get my hands on them, as they included some of the tv specials that never got a proper video release here, like the Patrick Stewart hosted broadcast premiere of The Cage.

I only have a few domestic TOS LD's, as I could only afford to get my favorite episodes back in the day. There's no indication of CX noise reduction on the discs I have. The Cage remaster might have digital sound, but Paramount was wildly inconsistent with such things, as I learned with umpteen versions of Grease.
I had some TOS episodes on Betamax for a while. The mono Hi-Fi was really good.

Unless somebody we know has them all, getting all three season's worth on any analog format is going to be an expensive proposition.

I'm willing to do a test capture of the analog sound so you can judge what there is to work with.

I presume the original two episode TOS DVD's have a different 5.1 mix than the current Blu-Ray's? Tempted to complete my collection of those, as factory sealed discs aren't hard to find cheap on Ebay these days.

This set is actually affordable.

According to the LDDB, Arena is missing four minutes, (syndicated version used by mistake?) and City on The Edge of Forever still has the replaced period music. VHS or Beta copies would be needed to patch those.

The Season 2 and 3 sets apparently have no edits.

More info on the LD releases.

Wow free shipping! Very tempting, but I'm broke for the forthcoming month with bills to pay.

Yes the old DVDs apparently had another older remix in 5.1.

It's not just about the audio quality, it's also about the syncing. If it's digital, it will automatically be easier to sync, whereas with analog the timing is gonna be dependent on the internal clock of both the LD player and the capturing device, and then wobble (if that's a thing with laserdiscs) etc.

>$100 for a single season is quite hefty but I guess it's an acceptable price all things considered.

Actually it's a great price - for a 16 disc box set - even more if you think it includes free international shipping - that is NOT low, by the way... think that, for example, X-Files half season - 6 or 7 discs IIRC - usually goes way over 100US$... and I'd LOVE to get them all (sadly only up to season 7), to have the digital PCM tracks...

I'd bite if I had the funds to spare. My LD to CD recorder setup has it's own little space now, so I'm not constantly swapping out cables with the other player I've dedicated to video capture. The set could easily be flipped on Ebay after the captures are done. Maybe we could crowdfund this one season at a time? We could have a parallel thread at OT and see who's interested in helping there.

Anybody got $589.99 to spare? This breaks down to under $200 a season. And free shipping. Wink
