[Released] Harry Potter saga - open matte
First scene with the second shot (the grave) the de-logoing is very apparent, otherwise looks good. The first screenshot you uploaded also has some weird issues with grain, as if it was duplicated and shifted vertically by a few pixels. Didn't see anything like it in the video though.

Second scene has no apparent de-logo problems to my eyes.

In general rather artifact-y, but hey it's open matte. Totally worth it. Big Grin

You got good eyes, Tom... after working the whole day (and night), I just added grainplate twice, and haven't noted it! Happy now screenshot is updated.

I agree that it's not perfect, but I used other sources, while the last one (that HDTV seen in the screenshot) was not used (yet) because unavailable at the time. But I do not agree that the delogo is VERY apparent... OK, it is noticeable if you know what to watch, but otherwise is quite nice (IMHO). Hope to find out a way to make it (almost) perfect!

Indeed, I'm proud to have delogo'ed this scene quite well, and the subtitles replacement is very good.

I know, it ain't BD quality, but think that both scene missed one HDTV source or the other; I *think* I could improve a bit the overall video quality (read: it will become a little more softed, but with less artefacts), combining both HDTV sources; this *should* cover more than 90% of the movie (I guess up to 95%, we'll see).

Perhaps a kind of feather might help to make it less apparent?

Have you ever worked with MVDegrain? It's a temporal Grain filter with up to 6 frames analysis (3 forward, 3 backward). Has done some wonders to reduce compression artifacts on some old computer generated graphics that were strongly compressed. It doesn't always work and it's quite slow, but you might give it a try; will probably need to duplicate the clip and only apply it to one, and then overlay them and play with opacity, because as the name says it not only removes artifacts but also grain. Then combined with your grainplate you might get close to the desired result? Maybe? Just an idea.

What about overlaying the Blu Ray for an increased sharpness in the center? Feasible? Or is the master and/or grading completely different?

On the right side of the 1st screen, the grass is not in the same place. On the left, it is. Weird.
Also, on the 2nd screen, I thought that you were aiming at resulting in a clean master without subs to avoid double subtitles when people will be adding their own language subs. I wish that was still the case as I don't really like having double subtitles at the same time.

Explain... don't understand, sorry.

Yes, but I want to try to avoid to degrain/denoise the picture, to preserve details, and to spare A LOT of processing time! Happy

I thought about this, but:
  1. only about half shots are IMAX, others are open matte or plainly cropped - too much work
  2. the color grading is quite different and, until now, it doesn't perfectly match
  3. the grain and details are better, and do not match very good

Good eyes too, Beber! Big Grin it is the result of logo removal, didn't notice it... as written before, I should use the second HDTV source, hope to solve everything.

I did it also a version without subs, but:
  1. the replaced area has a subtle color difference, which is covered by the new subs
  2. I thought about the "ethics" of subs removal - is it right?
  3. frankly, I don't know if I will be able to add forced subs... if I'll try a way, all the points would be not valid anymore, of course
p.s. I don't like double subs as well! Happy

Maksnew, HP8 without logo would be nice!

Well in Photoshop a feather is basically like a gradient/gaussian blur applied to a mask, blurring the edges of the mask (but not of the content itself of course!)

In a few cases I've had fantastic results with the following: MVDegrain (layer 1) + FQRestore (layer 2) (mixed with certain opacity) = Better sharpness, less artifact AND better grain (at least perceptually). Though the source was acceptable (Blu Ray at around 30 Mbps) to begin with, not sure if it would work here. But yeah, the processing time is ridiculous. Around 1 fps or less. Then again, x264 without that processing and with my settings was actually pretty slow too so in hindsight it didn't slow it down THAT much.

Thanks for the explanation, Tom!

If you want to share your avisynth script, I'll give it a try, even if at so low bitrate, I don't know if it would improve the quality that much - I'm pretty sure merging two sources could lead to a better result, but I'm open to test both methods.

Not perfect, but good enough to overlay any subtitles in different languages, I guess... now I should find out a way to get forced subs with TSmuxer.

Let me know if you want any help with this.

I'm not sure what you are using TSmuxer for if the subtitles are burned in on the Blu-ray video stream? If they are a separate subtitle track, then you can extract with TSmuxer and use something like Subtitle Edit to OCR them. Otherwise, you'll need to manually grab only the forced subs from the regular subtitle track.
