WARNING: four frame affected by a glitch (found in the master); I've done a rough fix, which works nevertheless, as the glitch is really small, even if noticeable; scroll to the end for the fix
Notes:
  • The fullscreen DVDs of HP 1,2,4,5,6 are 1.33:1 open matte, but, apart in rare cases where there is a bit more image (and a lot less), they are in practice contained within the 1.78:1 frame; for this reason - and also because they are low res - they will not be taken in consideration
  • HP 1, 2, 4, 5 are open matte
  • HP 3 on HDTV is mainly cropped but has more image than fullscreen DVD on both sides, even if cropped in comparison to widescreen; it retains few lines of image more on top and bottom; on DVD it is pan & scan
  • HP 6 is similar to HP 3, but retains a bit more few lines in comparison; actually, this is applicable only to cropped scenes; there are many scenes which are open matte
  • HP 7 is mainly cropped, with around 14% shots open matte, notably the whole "three brothers" scene, and 3% pan&scan
  • HP 8 is mixed cropped and open matte
  • HP 6, 7, 8 have logo that would be wiped away using a second (and third, where available) source
  • HP 7 best currently available version is 720p (new high bitrate Freeform capture) 1080i MPEG-2
  • HP 7 and 8: an eventual variable aspect ratio release could be taken in consideration as a side project
  • HDTV for all films (and also WEBdl for HP 5) would be used as main sources
  • HDTV would benefit of deblocking and a 35mm grain plate, as well as the WEBdl
  • Of course, the usual 5 languages (audio and subs tracks) would be added - all of them are available
  • bonus: Hungarian audio and subtitles tracks for all films, English 2.0 audio description track for HP 6, 7 ,8

Prisoner of Azkaban is Pan & Scan 16:9 on HDTV. Film was shot open aperture on Super 35 format though. The first teaser trailer and some trailers were open matte.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pt5aUMOEcF4

Order of the Phoenix stays OM only for the very early scenes, then quickly becomes pan & scan for the rest of the film. Which is really a strange decision. Half Blood Prince is virtually pan & scan throughout, with only a sliver extra info at the top & bottom. Deathly hallows Part 1 is also pan & scan.
Deathly Hallows Part 2 is selectively open matte, many scenes, especially the big set pieces, others are pan & scan. The open matte scenes, such as the Gringotts/dragon escape, battle of Hogwarts, the limbo scene, the final battle (mixed), Voldemort's end and the epilogue have that IMAX-like scale and look really good in 16:9.

Welcome back, Papai!

Sadly, you are right... Sad

At least, it's an alternative to the OAR, very well done - probably the director shot it 4/3 safe...

Thanks Andrea!

Well, sadly no. The 4:3 version is not only pan & scan of the 2.40:1 version, it even loses image from top and bottom of the BD. It's just horrible! I think the director hated 4:3 and just butchered the Full Screen DVD to spite the consumers off the format.

Yeah, apparently it's the only anamorphic entry in the series, the way people talk about the director hating Academy ratio.

Dunno... I made some fast comparison between the open matte Wink pan&scan version, with some screenshots of the BD found online, and "only" sides details are missing... maybe I have the "right" pan&scan version?!? Huh

It has not been shot anamorphic though. All HP films were shot standard 35mm and Super35mm and 4-perf or at the very least 3-perf; nothing lower.

Andrea, can you provide a "comparison"?

Here you are the comparison: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/209721

Actually, TV version, despite the fact, as we have stated before, it has a lot of image chopped at the sides, has more details (few lines) on top and bottom... so, technically speaking, it is an open matte version, indeed... Big Grin

Update: thanks a new friend, I put my fingers on the 720p open matte version (with logo) of eps. 7-8; so, now, we should find ep. 6 - if it actually exists...

I did my homeworks today... took two partial files for ep. 8, one called "IMAX" (which is partly widescreen, and partly open matte), and another one "open matte", and put them in comparison - fast, dirty, but just to get an idea; the latter is from "Nova TV", hence different from the other cap posted by Papai here: http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Harry-P...232/page/1

Well, when the so-called "IMAX" shows open matte image, it is indeed the same as the open matte version, while when image is widescreen, in the open matte image is simply cropped on the sides; until 20m in the movie, the open shots are few, maybe 10%, while from 20m on it is the most part of the shots; then files are over around 35m... read somewhere that about half the shots are open (and I can believe it); the sad thing is I haven't found it in real HD (yet) - still don't know if it exists somewhere - along with ep. 7 - that I should check; if we are lucky, it got the same treatment, if not... it will be simply a p&s version... (EDIT: at this point, I guess if ep. 3 has some open shot too, instead of all p&s)

Now, ep. 6 is missing from the list... what's up with it? I even found traces of an "IMAX 3D experience", anyone has an idea about this?!? (EDIT: there are rumors of this version broadcasted on TNT...)
