[Released] Harry Potter saga - open matte

I thought that, when I have audio and subs (set as forced) in the same language, this would work. You know, it's not that good that you are watching a movie, just to discover you had to select subs to understand something, and you have to pause, to find out the subs, to be back to the start of the scene etc. so forced subs are a must IMHO.

I don't have any experience with this issue, but I did find an interesting thread for you that might provide a few options:

I hope it helps! Smile

@Tom: first of all, thank for the "borderline crazy-genius thing" comment, it's what I've thought myself! Happy

The fact that I use only free software for my projects - call it a dinosaur thing, I know - doesn't allow me to use many options; I'm aware of MultiAVCHD that is a good software, but I can't let it work well in this new PC... but, even if it's possible to instruct the player to use the English forced subs, the user setting should, in theory, override this - let's say I have set Italian as default language, it will select Italian subs and/or audio tracks, and that's not a problem. But what if I've set, let's say, Japanese, or other languages which are not included? Would the player select the English if the chosen language is not present? I know there are some players which let you select first, second, third languages, but not everyone does it. Or would the player select no track at all?

With my idea, the "ethic" of preserving the movie with its intended hardsubs is safe, while any other foreing subs would be overlaid over them as a "patch" - invisible to the end user; so, it would be the same thing, quality wise, except that if you decide to not use subs at all, the hardcoded ones would be always there. Call it again "borderline crazy-genius thing" - maybe I'm a bit psycho, who knows?!? (delete "maybe") Happy

@Freddy: thanks for the link, I checked it before, and applied it; it effectively changes the status of subs tracks to forced.

I've got a KDLinks media player that I watch just about everything on, and it completely ignores default or forced subtitle flags, so that's why I have a preference for hard subs. But a Blu-Ray disc with properly flagged subs shouldn't have this issue in a Blu-Ray player.

Sporv, about your idea of "movie background" instead of black background for foreign subs, you'd have to consider that depending on the language, the translation could be shorter or longer. To secure this thing, you'd have to put these subs on a wide background, not just the hardcoded area, or some of it could still be seen in case of a shorter translation. That's a lot of complication. My God, you are motivated!

Well, the background would be the same for every subs; the area would cover all the English subs; if foreign would be shorter, no problems; if longer, the background would be just transparent.

Lot of complication? You bet it! Motivated? A bit... Big Grin Not only for this project itself, but just to test the idea - YAO subs worked well, so... Wink Still not 100% sure I will be able to do it properly, but want to try nevertheless... wish me luck! Big Grin

Sporv, all I want for Christmas are the first 3 released Tongue

Sorry for my absence, will continue through the holidays. Just pop in here to check HP - sadly, projects are on hold on my end except a few minutes here or there.

Nice to see things still moving forward.

UPDATES

Finally I have decided to NOT add hardsubs in the Nagini scene. Why? Well, because in the previous films, the scenes where Parseltongue were spoken had no hardsubs... for the forced subs, apart Nagini scene, I have added the translations for "Here lies Dobby, a free elf" and "Undesirable No. 1", but using a font similar to previous forced subs (and white color as well); also, the "19 years later" card has now replacement subs (with similar fonts and colors) overlaid to it, so no double subs as in the BD. Hope this solution would be good for everyone.

UPDATES

I started encoding HP6, as the temp file is 170GB, and I need space! It *should* be ready on Thursday afternoon; after that, I'll watch it to grasp eventual problems (read: just to be sure, but there shouldn't be any), then start to encode HP1, check, mux, release, and so on. I've spotted two bad frames on HP8, but decided to encode it for last, just to have time to release previous films ASAP.

menzerin provided Hungarian audio and subtitle tracks; if someone else want to add another European language, let me have the audio and subs tracks ONLY from BD, and FOR ALL the films in the next three days. I plan to add another two, three at max, to not exceed the maximum bitrate allowable, so the first received, the first added. I'd like to add Russian and Portuguese, and I could consider Japanese - konnichi wa! - as an exception to the rule! Big Grin

Oh, forgot to mention (or did I?): each film would be released as BD-50, with an average video bitrate of 30mbps, to preserve any little detail and single grain; hope this will make anybody happy!

HP 6 encoded, muxed, checked, ready to be released!

HP 1 encoding, *should* be ready on Saturday or Sunday, then checked and immediately released.
HP 2...5 will follow. HP 7 should be fixed using new HQ source; HP 8 should only be encoded.
