Agreed. Technically there are changes so something has to give but in reality I very much doubt someone could tell the difference between the original 44.1 and a well up-converted 48.

Agreed, that as long as the conversion is done properly, you can't really hear the difference.

There are some CD rips that I have heard, that were at 48 and had a "metallic" sound to them due to incorrect conversion... however, this was usually in mp3 format, which adds to the problem.

The people making the conversions here, know what they are doing and it's all in WAV format, so no additional distortion due to a lossy format.

On side-note, I'm wondering why they didn't include 44.1 in the BD spec. Does anyone know?

More side notes: Occasionally a laserdisc has "closed captioned" subtitles that are not on any other edition. As of 2015 it's not a lot of them that do, but still a few. I found for example:
Richard Lester's "Return of the musketeers". A decent movie but hard to follow the dialogue. (The .srt on the 'net is no good.)
A few other movies are no masterpieces: "Jupiter's Darling", "Being human" (1994).
Somewhat better is "Monty Python: Parrot sketch not included" which also has some exclusive footage.

I have an X-Fi card. But the Audio Control Panel doesn't have a Bit-Matched tab. Is there a way to make it appear?

Ah, IIRC there's a basic level of X-Fi card - the Titanium, most likely - below which bit-matching isn't available. I'd suggest looking for a used one of those (that's the one I have), particularly given the current Creative product line is fairly baffling.
