[request] Cube 2: Hypercube (now in the 'In Progress' subforum)
#21
It is perfect! I was searching for the logo and all was able to notice was a little glitch in some frames with the "logo slice" of the right side (the one you had to copy a square nearby to cover). I saw it because I was searching for it, in other circumstances I wouldn't have noticed. The results are spectacular!

I'll try to get a "colorful" clip.

Thumbs Up
Test 3 - clip b - WARNING: there is a nipple in this clip! Wink

https://mega.co.nz/#!7t1wzARC!0dKb6DO_vi...KkkD3a1zoo

Watching thoroughly at the "guilty" spots, it could be noticed really few instances where they are not perfect; but they are negligible when the clip is watched in its integrity... read: I prefer to watch it ten times instead of watch the version with a logo; plus, the top added details are a welcome bonus!!!

It seems there is a new [spoRv] project I should start - it will be the first "born" on FanRes, unless someone else would post another before it! Wink

I wasn't able to see any glitch because I was watching the nipple. LOL

Joking apart, it is almost unnoticeable. When you search for it you can see it very few times, but as the movie has some dirt now and then (it shows more than in other films mostly because of the PURE WHITE background during almost the 90% of the film), the logo glitch can pass as another dot of film dust.

Anyway, almost perfect results in a very complicated scene with lot of movement, fades and some color! The upper slice is perfect too and we remove that distracting black bar.

I'm glad you fell for this movie! Big Grin

I'm downloading (veeeeeery slowly) an untouched italian DVD to get you the audio track. Wink

And maybe the DVD framing is different! I want to check it out as soon as possible.

I also have a copy of the spanish DVD (sadly not untouched, but reduced with DVDshrink to fit in a DVD5). I have to find it. The audio will be untouched, though.

OK, took some time to remove dirt, and also tweaked the gamma:

gamma 1 vs 0.9 dirt removed - http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/108220
gamma 1 vs 0.8 dirt removed - http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/108221
gamma 1 vs 0.7 dirt removed - http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/108223

then, even with gamma at 0.7 there is always clipped whites... so, I thought to change the levels from PC to TV, set the gamma to 0.85, raise the saturation to 1.1 and here you are the result:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/108224

edit: same as previous, but with contrast lowered to 0.9

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/108226 - this is my preferred one until now!

Thoughts?

Question: Aren't we risking to lose detail if we use a dirt removal process?

As for the gamma, I would take the original of the clip or maybe the first one. 2 and 3 are too dark in dark zones and 4 is too clear, kind of soft.

Is problematic. If we darken the image we gain detail in the backgrounds but lose it in the faces (too dark zones).

Looking again at the last one, I've noticed it gains detail in the backgrounds and maybe a little in the face. The soft looking may be in comparision with the original gamma, but looking at it alone makes me think maybe it's the way to go. Maybe watching a clip with those settings would help.

The dirt removal process will theoretically risk to lose details, but I used it in a lot of process, and never got problems - except in one frame where there was a LOT of smoke... then, I lowered the strenght and all was OK... so, it's probably safe to use it, as it seems there are a lot of dirt!

I edited my previous post to add a second screenshot to the last setting!

I like it better too. Flesh tone looks more natural to me. The white is not that white, but the rest benefits from this setting. Is there a way to make the white "whiter" while leaving the rest untouched in your last screenshot?

About the dirt, it really has a lot. It would be great to have a clean copy of the movie.

I was thinking that if I get that untouched DVD maybe you could get the correct gamma values from there.

Looking more at your last screenshot, I found 2 details:

* The skin marks on the actress' forehead lose definition.

* The start of the right half of her hair blurs a lot, losing hair detail. Just at the right side of the like of skin. I think that can be because of the noise removal.

I have watched the original clip and yours several times in my computer and my tv and my conclusion is that I would let the gamma, contrast and all that as is in the original. Mainly for two reasons:

* I notice some loss of detail on the skin and the hair.

* The image seems warmer, but the cube were they are trapped should be cold, more like the original clip.

I would wait to compare with a DVD. Maybe there will be the answer.

I like the dirt removal, but (and I hate to be the bringer of bad news) there is a problem with the bolts. They are all over the place and they look like, yes, dirt.

I made a capture to show the loss of detail on the dark parts of the hair and I found by chance that a bolt was missing. If you look there in the clip, the bolt appears and disappears. Sad

Bolt missing, got it... the strenght of the dirt removal script is too high! I tried a bit lower setting and, the bolt is back!

About gamma: honestly, if I have to choose between a (very limited) detail loss, or clipped white, I will choose the first... a very small details (like hair) loss is due to incremented contrast, but again, to me is a good trade to have back more noticeable details deleted by the clipped whites - like the cube background metal bars.

At the end, comparing the 1080i with the DVD will be definitely useful! I leave the task to you! Wink
