Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Director's Edition HD Recreation (Version 3 out now)
#31
Great news. I've only recently come to Trek and quite like TMP for what it is. The current blu-ray is quite awful but the great news is Paramount has recently re-energized their home video department and are doing scores of new 4K catalog titles. Trek cannot be far away since Khan has already been revisited. That all said I think the theatrical TMP cut is actually the best despite all the severe compromises and rushed beyond insanity scheduling.
And of the currently available transfers, the letterbox LD is arguably the best. That's a heck of a great transfer with great sound that is better than the other five in the series.

I have a very small update to this that I’m putting out. I rendered V3 out awhile back to correct some small errors, particularly a jump cut that I accidentally introduced. I was waiting and see if there were any bigger changes I wanted to make to justify a new release, but since there aren’t, I might as well release it now.

V3 changes:
- added Grace Lee Whitney (as Janice Rand) to the list of co-stars in the opening credits. She was treated terribly during her time on the show, and I think her name deserves to be next to the rest of the original cast (some promotional materials featured her similarly).
- fixed issue with the BD footage, where aggressive DNR caused the bottom left part of the frame to smear and warp. 12:12
- fixed issue in the original DC effects where the shuttle disappeared for a frame. 13:00
- fixed one frame editing error I introduced 15:21
- The original effects have an issue where the shuttle moves, but the background is frozen. They trimmed the beginning in the DC, but when matching the edit, I trimmed the end of the shot rather then the beginning, as I didn't know why it was shorter. Now matches the DC. 20:38
- fixed two frames of encoding garbage from the HDTV 26:37
- The audio is now the untouched dolby digital track from the DVD (not rencoded) until the end credits, when it seamlessly cuts to the new end credits music. This saves some space and preserves Blu-ray compatibility if you want to remux.

Anyone who wants the updated version can PM me. If you already have a previous version, you probably don't need this, unless you were planing to rewatch the movie. I mostly wanted to get rid of the jump cut that I noticed I had accidentally made.

I watched this and I mentioned it on the spleen as well ... it seems there are scenes missing from the DC in this release. One of the first of note is the San Francisco Star Fleet scene with Kirk and Commander Sonek(spelling?). The tram area on the right of the screen that was redone for the DC is missing entirely.

Any reason you chose this specific route?

Thanks

Yeah, they're stuck in SD and the original effects look good. In particular, the redone tram matte is really sloppy photoshop work (you can see where the cutout erases painted figures and cuts them in half) and completely screws up the visual weight of the frame. Because I had to pick and choose what effects to use, I choose the ones that I thought were necessary replacements to missing or rushed effects rather than revisionist stuff that detracts from the original work. Including all the changes would also make a much larger chuck in SD rather than HD, which I really wanted to avoid. As I noted in the readme, this is why I called it a fanedit.

That being said, I recently rendered out a "purist edition" that includes most all changes, no matter how big or small, after a couple of people on OT.com asked for one. People are welcome to PM me for a copy.

If you need more work ... Smile

Have you tried layering however-many-captures you have to self-cancel the noise & compression artifacts? Of course, the work part of this is stabilizing and aligning the images throughout the film for each capture.

Go for it!  Big Grin

Its VERY well done and I suspect the best we will ever get given Paramount's less than keen approach to the directors cut remaster. If they hadn't of scrimped on the effects in the first place we'd have a nice shiny 1080p BluRay of this version, thanks to iguanaclerk we have the next best thing !!!!

Hi, I’m in the process of compiling a v3 of the purist edition, which fixes another error I found and adds in more shots in HD by compositing the SD changes over the DVD footage. This is now at a level of polish where I will be comfortable recommending it alongside the original version of my edit. Here are some sample frames: https://imgur.com/a/ALontqP

For this release of this project I have compiled four foreign dubs (Italian, French, Russian and German) and a host of subtitles from two different European dvd releases.

I still need the Spanish dub (which should be on the english region 2 dvd). If you have this dub, I would love to get a copy. Most of the subtitles are upscaled vobsubs and so they don’t have a great font. If anyone has proofread soft subs (srt/ass) of the director’s cut in their language, I would love a copy as well. I also welcome subtitles in any other language than what I have currently. I know there was a region 4 dvd, which should have different subs, and I also wonder if there was ever a release for Asian regions. Currently only some of the English subs are HD (Using Berber's nice settings for Futura typesetting). I also made HD subs for the forced alien sub tracks, but they are in all caps on the DVD and I haven’t changed that yet as I might make errors with regards to how words are capitalized in those languages. Here is what I have now:
Quote:English (HD)
Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH) (English) (HD)
SDH (Alternate) (English)
German [ger]
Spanish [spa]
French [fre]
