Oh I've heard, and I'm very excited. Still, Paramount hasn't green-lit anything yet, and I get the feeling David Fein announced it to help put public pressure on them.

I also still want to cap these subs for posterities sake (There is a decent chance a new master of the theatrical version will use soft subs just like the bluray).

A user on OT.com was kind enough to rip this for me. If anyone wants a copy, I'll happily provide it.

That's a prudent call, for as we all know even if it happens there's no guarantee that it will be done exactly the same way. Or not have something botched up.

One guarantee though- if a new version is released, all previous versions will likely disappear, so best to grab now.

Wasn't the redone effects created in SD? They'd have to re-render everything for a new HD release. I'm a bit skeptical about this.

Thanks why Paramount has dragged their heels on green-lighting this, presumably the budget would be closer to the original project than a more standard film restoration.
David Fein says he if he gets a green-lit, he would track down as many of the original sfx guys as possible to redo the work in HD. Outside of redoing any SD matte work, the big thing would be making sure the CGI holds up alongside the 4k restoration, which would probably mean detailing or redoing a lot of the models. Most of the assets do still exist, so that does make it a little easier than restarting every shot from scratch.

It's pretty funny that if they had done the effects for theatrical release at the time, it would still probably have used a 2k DI for the effects and we'd be talking about the film being some mash up of 4k scans and 2k effects.

Going back and redoing the effects in 4k is pretty crazy and could be the first time anyone has done that for a home release.
I wonder if James Cameron has similar plans for the Director's Cut of the Abyss.

Tried sending the OP a PM for this but for whatever reason i'm not allowed to access the page. If anyone can help with a link for the latest version I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
