I don't know a lot about D-Theater, just from the little research I've done. I do know it's max resolution is 1080i, which is usually little better than 720p, Mpeg2 with a max bitrate of 14Mbps.

I don't know the specifics of BLOODSUCKERZ release, I haven't seen that. Is it a direct copy of the data from the DVHS tape or has it already been re-encoded a second time?

That would compare poorly to ABM's 1080p 10Mbit/s H.264, even if it is also constant bitrate.
Still, it depends on what you see.

As far as I remember, it was done from scratch using the original DTheater, maybe a remux of it, untouched. From 1080i, IVTCed to 1080p, and followed the work being done on it. You can already see how it looks in Maksnew's comparisons: those are the screens matted with black bars. Looks better to me.

I'm encoding right now a regraded version; I'm sure that in a point next to the end colors and brightness change quite abruptly due to the fact the film miss a lot of frames so I have to refer to the last frame between the cut for regrading; but, apart this, it seems quite nice. More info after I'll finish to watch it.

I have watched it and it's very "filmic" - it reminds a lot a real film, even if the regraded color is not very faithful to the film scan, it retains the spirit quite well!

Now I have to decide if release it as UHD - of course only an upscale, but with a tad of sharpening and noise reduction needed after the quite heavy contrast treatment - or as HD, and which grain apply - fine or coarse...
Personally, I'm leaning towards UHD and coarse grain, the latter would be not much worse than fine grain on HD, though!

Crazy how much the 35mm scan and your regrade tend towards teal. I never realised how blue the film was, but I can totally understand why, considering Cameron's other work.

Not sure about the UHD upscale, lo sai meglio che tutti! As long as the bitrate was proportional to the amount of pixels we gain with it, then I'm sure it'll look just fine.
