I heard about the lawsuit, but a journalist who interviewed Claude Zidi widow for I think some video bonuses on a new DVD of one of his old films, told me the guy was debunked from his demands due to the similarities being too broad.

zoodberg, IIRC I haven't used a grain plate for the pics; if so, it's the usual 35mm "normal" grain - not too fine nor coarse - but if you want to know the stock, I have no idea! But it works pretty well with Cameron's movies - apart Aliens, that would use BD grain.

OK, as expected, encoding crashed at around 21m, so I took the occasion to make the Italian audio track, and take a look at it.
What can I say? There are few frames here and there with excessive color pixelation, but they aren't too many, and I found not so distracting, and, watching it, I thought I was in a cinema at the day (when I wasn't aware of the whole OAR "affaire") and they get a brand new struck film; the filmic look and feel was there, without the problems found with the films after repeated viewings like scratches, dirt spots etc. that always noted in the past (until the advent of digital cinema); the clipped whites were not evident as well, but maybe because the first part is almost all filmed at night. All in all, a very nice experience, hope to finish the encoding soon to watch it all! @Farstarbuck: I wonder if it is, despite the fact it's clearly stated as P&S, an open matte edition... don't think it will never match well with the DVD/HDTV/D-Theater, but still curious to know! EDIT: checked up to 34m; can confirm the white clipping is not severe, and could be noted - if you don't let you flow on the vision, and look instead for it - mainly in the strong lights. The film look still holds true!

This edition preserves more at the top of the frame as well as most of the width. Just like with T2 or the Abyss that I have also.

@Farstarbuck: now, we should find out if a P&S (read: open matte/fullscreen) DVD version exists... Updates: encoded until 1h02s, still good with no huge problems! Spanish audio track seems available; now I need German one, possibly the DTS. Edit: up to 1h30m, again still good! Edit2: up to 2h07m, can confirm that the few color pixelations are confined mainly in the first half hour, not so distracting, and the clipped whites are not distracting at all - yes, they are present, but, as written before, limited almost always to lights and explosions. And the film spirit is preserved, and it's great!

lossless encoding ended! film Vs regraded: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/128695 result is really satisfing and, even if not 100% perfect, I can say it's around 99.99% - enough to be released, I suppose! As you can see, it is pretty close to film; I just toned down the magenta level - I really didn't like that sea color... yes, pretty hot sometimes, but when in motion, the clipped whites aren't so noticeable, and never disturbing. Got Italian, Spanish, Russian and English 5.1 AC3 tracks; I need German (possibly DTS) and French audio and subs tracks. About possible further English tracks to include, there are various DTS tracks: Cinema, D-Theater, laserdisc... which one(s) do you like to be added? About subs: there are few lines with English hardsubs; would you like foreign forced subs to be placed over it (within a black background)? Or below them? Thanks given by: Stamper

This is full open matte (for the whole film but few seconds), does not miss frames, has not scratches and dirt (but few frames with color pixelation), increased brightness for low light scenes, magenta blanket removal. Of course, without film scan, this version would never exist, so THANKS AGAIN for the all ones who were involved in the 35mm project!

I'm uploading the French AC3. You'll have it in a few hours, late tonight I suppose. I vote for theatrical English dts track.
How about making a smaller low-bitrate version of your encode to share by PM so that I/we can work on foreign subtitles for that specific version? |
