[Help] 2 VHS Audio Captures to remove faults.
#1
Hello Everyone.

I thought id throw this out to the fanres hive brain Smile

I have 2 VHS captures from 2 Different tapes, its for the audio side of things and the Video side is irrelevant.
Both have dropouts and faults but (Hoping!) not in the same places and the idea is to edit between them for a clean Audio Track.

Does anybody know of any quicker way than just cutting between the 2?
Kind of like a method of removing the difference?

Any help and advice would be great Smile

If you had 3 different ones, you could sync them up (extreme precision required!), then use a Median (though I don't know of any existing software to do it, so you would have to code it or find someone who will), hoping that there are never 2 tapes having the same defect at the same time.

I would think, though I'm no expert in this department, that if each capture has drop outs in different but fixable spots with the other this should be more than sufficient.

Just a matter of listening to both (not simultaneously) in Audacity (or Reaper) and then crossfading the audio from one source to the other when necessary. It's pretty straightforward and just involves a little time.

Thanks everyone.

The straightforward cross fading is my plan.
In this age of AVIsynth and magic plugin's, I wondered if there was something available to automate this process like TomArrow was suggesting.

Since my original post Ive discovered a low hum throughout on one of the captures that appears to come from the source, so may have to locate a 3rd copy! (And annoyingly there is a fault in the same place on both tape's)

If the fault occurs at the exact same time, then it may have been present in the source that the VHS was made from. Getting a third copy might prove to be pointless, but it will help you verify if it's your setup or a "glitch" in the original source that was transferred to VHS. Just food for thought... Wink

It's a fault that has been caused by wear and tear I'm afraid. it just so happens that both are worn around the start of the movie which is where there is the 'crackles' that unluckily happen to fall in the same place once or twice.

The movie in question is Kickboxer (1989) It's original UK VHS release contains additional scenes and the original sound mix (including an actors voice that was later redubbed).
Ill go into the history of this in it's own thread but It has never had a digital release I know of in this form.
Upon further inspection I may get away with only using the elements I need, and incorporating them into the standard US mix. It just would be nice to preserve it in it's entirety Smile

That makes sense. Hopefully you will be able to figure it out. Good luck Wink

sorry if this isnt appropriate for this thread, but isnt Kickboxer the one Van Damme killed an "extra" in, accidentally of course. Just wondered if that was the cause of the different cut.

Ive not heard of him Killing and extra!
He took someones eye out while filming Cyborg with a prop knife.

I think the different cuts were more to do with filling time due to censorship issues.
Although there is a little more to it that I will go into when I open a project thread Smile
