[Help] How to apply delay to a whole video file, not just the video or audio streams?
#1
I'm trying to apply a delay on the UHD of Die Hard to sync it to a 35mm print I have, and I've been following this guide to help me sync the mkv of the UHD, but when running it in eac3to, it causes a error - unknown file output format, anything in the code I did incorrectly or missed?

Code I used for the first try:
eac3to input.mkv output.mkv +208ms

if you're just trying to set a delay on an audio track, you can use MKVToolNix. or just load the audio file up in something like audacity and add 208ms of silence to the beginning of the track.

What about the video and subtitle streams?

Aren't you trying to delay the UHD audio so it matches the 35mm video?

Yes, and I'm also syncing the video, chapter markers, and subtitles (PGS) as well.

you don't sync video as it's almost always static. you might make some minor cuts and change the framerate, but you're gonna be syncing an audio track to a video source and retiming subtitles to match. an audio track syncing perfectly a 35mm transfer is never going to happen though so this might be more work than you realize.

you need to take the audio that matches your video source and line it up against the audio you want to use and most likely make dozens of edits to sync it up correctly. if you want the subtitles to match perfectly, you can notate the audio edits you make and then reapply these to the subtitles to they match perfectly using something like subtitle edit.

i've thought about putting up a short tutorial on how to do audio syncs in audacity...or maybe just a short recording of me syncing an audio track with commentary/narration to explain what i'm doing but not sure when i'll get around to that.

Here's a free online subtitle editor I've used before which can adjust the timecode for each line of text:

That would be appreciated.
