2001 70mm 50th Anniversary Print
#1
For those of you near the Castro in San Francisco, they will be showing a brand new 70mm print of 2001... Check out the description. Sounds really promising!

The Castro is proud to be screening a new 70MM print for the 50th Anniversary presentation of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece.
For the first time since the original film’s release, this 70mm print was struck from new printing elements
made from the original camera negative, meaning it’s a true photochemical film recreation.
There are no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits.
(1968, 142 min plus intermission, 70mm 'Scope)

I'm guessing this print will be making the rounds... so keep an eye out in the coming months!

Note that "struck from new printing elements" does not mean they've gone back to the original camera negative. At least it's coloring (from the trailer) is not like the Blu-ray release ... not that I think this yet-another coloring is much better. (My hope was for something like the Stanley Kubrick supervised Criterion Collection laserdisc, which itself needs to be adjusted, mostly brightness & contrast, to counter laserdisc technology constraints.) Still, it's "unrestored" nature would be a better start for an eventual restoration project. Smile

Here are some comparison snapshots between the DVDBeaver Blu-ray  review 2001: A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray] (TOP) and the YouTube 50th Anniversary 70mm trailer 2001: A Space Odyssey - 50th Anniversary 70mm Re-Release Official Trailer [HD] (BOTTOM) . .

Pretty sure the Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn said on their twitter that this print is passed around nationwide all year long and they'll be getting it in August. You know I'll be there. For anyone who wants to see it at the theater, be on top of your local places to see if it's coming to your town.

A little more information from the  2001Italia website, a blog dedicated to 2001: A Space Odyssey . .

2001Italia - 20180329 :: 2001: A Space Odyssey returns to theaters with a new 70mm print Wrote:It's been in the works for a while, and it has just been officially announced: on occasion of the 50th anniversary, 2001: A Space Odyssey will be back in theaters. A new, "unrestored" 70mm print, whose production has been overseen by Christopher Nolan, will be unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival on May 12, introduced by the director. ...

Also, the 4K UHD Blu-ray (now disappeared from Amazon US and France) will be now released in "the fall of 2018".

So how accurate is this? Looks way more stylized in those comparisons.

Don't go by the YT trailer. There's big threads on this over at HTF and BD.com. Even a Robert Harris thread. These new prints are going cross country and playing at some select locations. There's a list on in70mm.com

Essentially they made new prints right off of the 1999 protection interpositive and did so photochemically meaning any damage is baked in. Some have said the sound is the original with panning and others said their screening was not the original mix. The sound is supposedly from a 35mm protection element and played back via DTS discs as Ned Price said the original mag was too far gone.

This may be a blessing in disguise for color as the 4K release was postponed and may be graded just like that teal infused trailer. However apparently Leon Vitali and others supervised the new 4K master so that will be it's own thing.

-The YT trailer comes from a newer scan than the 2007 master. I'm assuming from the scan that was being done by Price in fall of 2017 (and the same scan that will be in the DCP released in June).
-The color seems to've been botched in some regard (perhaps a poor HDR to SDR conversion?) since the highlights are blown out in a few places. Wouldn't use the YT trailer as an indication of how the UHD will look.
-The 70mm prints were timed using Kubrick's original printer points; the color should be close to the theatrical prints barring deficiencies from fading.
-The theatrical soundmix is being offered to cinemas in the form of 6 channel DTS (with 5.1 channel remix offered to cinemas that do not have the 5 speakers behind the screen)... and DTS as a higher sound quality than a mag track could ever dream of offering.
-Vitali says he was involved but I doubt he was actually involved beyond maybe showing up one day and giving approval.
