OK, here comes the Die Hard comparisons:

Well, that's not what I was hoping for. I would have loved to come up with something that would resemble the Netflix/4K DCP, but it seems to me that it resembles more the old Blu-ray. It's not as dark as the MadVR conversion, though. I only wish it came out as colorfull and with that golden hue that I like on the Netflix remaster.

Based on the screenshots, I actually quite like it, maybe somewhere between the netflix and the ripbot would be the best compromise, find the netflix a little bit too golden for my liking. Certainly looks better than that 1080p conversion doing the rounds which is over dark.

Sure, I guess it looks fine, but I don't see a drastic improvement over the Blu-ray that uses the old master. I don't have it on hard drive at the moment, so I can't add screens from it to the comparisons.

Ripbot seems to do a great job Smile

What are your MAD VR settings?

Indeed, that RipBot264 seems to be a pretty cool tool. I'll try it on a Starship Troopers clip next.
My MadVR settings are the default. I didn't touch them 'cause I like what it does with The Dark Knight; it reminds me the look of the DCP I saw in 2015. I just wish for the red to be more red and not a bit too orangy, though.

Marban already did an excellent encode of Starship Troopers using a high bitrate based on screenshots l've seen, haven't had time to get it and check it out though. The 4k of Die Hard overall is a lttle underwhelming anyway, whether its the uhd or netflix, expected more from it, still an improvement over the bluray though.

You guys must have some serious HD space for all these UHD rips  Tongue

It's a shame that there is no lossless AVI option, I guess you could always render a 'lossless' x264 output (qp=0) and work from there.

Top to bottom : UHD HDR using MadVR / UHD HDR to HD SDR using RipBot264:

Even though I'm not so much into that orange shade of skintone, I'm leaning towards the MadVR conversion on this one. I like the saturation more, especially on blues and reds.
I made this clip in 2-pass @ 15 mbps using the "film" setting.

Yea, have to agree on this one, madvr appears better on colour but needs to be slightly brighter. Not sure if Marban tweaked the settings for his version, but you could always slightly increase the saturation in ripbot to compensate.

Doesn't the HDR metadata work on scene-by-scene/frame-by-frame basis? Unless the downconversion software is working with the metadata surely some scenes will look better than others (and some scenes will be downright wrong).
