In reference to Top Gun, I just bought an old DVD that has both fullscreen and "Widescreen" versions. So the quality ain't HD, but it's better than VHS so I'm happy with my purchase.

Also, the original "Ace Ventura" DVD had some bonus footage reincorporated back into the film, but was not widescreen... As far as I know, the laserdisc was the only place to find this full version of the movie with the bonus footage. I own the DVD from the Deluxe Double Feature DVD box set from some years ago, and that version does NOT have that footage reincorporated, but I cannot speak for the Blu as I haven't seen that one yet.

The extra footage was the one scene where Ace is investigating the dolphin tank after Snowflake was taken... A bunch of reporters show up and he acts as Snowflake's trainer, Heinz.

Add Charley Varrick (1973) to the list of offenders. It recently came out on Blu-Ray in Germany.

Using RGBMatch() (I'm not very good at doing it manually), I was able to change the ugly yellow-green "piss" tint of the recently released German blu-ray to to more closely match the more natural looking colors of the Fremantle UK PAL DVD.

It's not exactly perfect, but it's more tolerable to look at than the Blu-Ray color palette.

"Top Gun" is presented at 1.90:1 on the LaserDisc from 1996 and it is indeed open matte. Apparently there were also some release prints matted at 1.85:1.
