1st Gen Star Trek II DVD
#1
Does anyone have a copy of the 1st ST2 DVD that came out? The one before the CE/DC 2-disc DVD.

I'm trying to figure out and can't remember if it was the LD transfer bumped up to DVD or a new master altogether.

Yes. I'm ripping the disc now to see if it's still good. (But I don't think it's the same as the LD.) If successful, I'll post some screenshots when I have a minute.

Let me know if you want screenshots of any particular scene.  This DVD has always impressed me: it is 100% soft telecined, the video stream was encoded and flagged by someone who knew what they were doing, and it doesn't look half bad for an early-ish DVD.

Looks better than a lot of recent DVD releases.
There's even a little soft grain that is clean and even looking.

Oh, recent DVD releases can be awful, the worst tending to be the ones that come bundled in the BD+DVD combo packs.  Some of them even have standards-conversion issues, which is inexcusable these days, and often they are not worth giving away.

The spectogram for the Dolby 2.0 Surround track on this disc looks exactly like that of the LD PCM, but obviously it has the cut-off that one would expect from a DD encoding, so I don't imagine that the disc has any particular value as an audio source.  In terms of video, I seem to remember that someone said a while back that the LD was different from other home-video releases and had more picture information, but I never did a side-by-side comparison.

Thanks for posting those shots, Chew. It does look like a different master

Nice to see someone did the work right. Mind if I ask what color the ships are? Blue or gray?

Hi, just wondering, what does the DD AC3 cut-off look like?
