[Released] Mad Max (1979) original color timing & mix

Ehr... 35mm grain plate was "baked in" 2160p encoding... no problems to make a 1080p, but dunno how good grain would be when downscaled - probably unnoticeable...

As the 4K is not HDR anymore, I think a 1080p version would have great success over here in sync with all the audio tracks Smile

2160p encoding finished; I made immediately a 1080p HEVC test clip (around 10GB) and uploaded online - sent the link via PM, if someone else interested please PM me.

NOTES:

the clip is without audio tracks, but it is in sync with Stamper's DVD project, so just mux it with preferred audio tracks.

After upload, I watched the 2160p and spot at least one error around frame 76733 (the red car colors gone awry); I think that, all in all, the contrast is 99.99% spot on - I mean, no "pumping", while colors (apart previous mention) is pretty much perfect, while sometimes saturation is a bit too high or there are color "splotches"; the ones I spotted were present in the source(s), so now I need that volunteers that have downloaded it should post here a list of wrong shots (possibly with begin and end frame numbers, or at least hh:mmConfuseds) but please take in account also the source(s).

This is because I need fresh eyes, and different opinions - where I see a problem maybe others would not see it, and vice versa. Thanks to all in advance!

Cool! So there were no frames missing compared to the Warner DVD?

Yes, no frame missimg in the UHD, while there were quite some on the HDTV (replaced with repeated ones)

Looks good. I just think it still lacks saturation to be spot on with the Warner.

Lots of problems baked in with the photography and the actual 4K rip, but overall it's way closer to the film prints.

Just up the saturation so that it pops.

EDIT I compared and you also need more luminance. As is this brings out problems of continuity between shots that were shot at different times with changing weather.

I have compare your test encodes for 4&2K and they looks smooth - DNR.

I think Willa & Co. have perfect settings for encoding in h256 & x264.

Yep, for sure, as they were just test clip, and with GPU encoding, speed is around 50fps while with CPU encoding - albeit 16core - speed is waaaay lower...

But, wait... those screenshots have a different frame size than my source - and different quality, too!!! Eek

Yep, check what the source is! No worry as they all align once synced LOL.

I watched again and I still think there are problems, despite the color match, it still looks off and digital compared to the Warner.

OK, checked the other sources (screenshots), and indeed they match all perfectly 100% apart two images... as those two has lower details, I bet they are wrongly taken (almost surely) from blu-ray, so I've decided to stick with my source - again, I'm 99.99999% sure there is only ONE UHD source.

In the last version V4 - the one I made the 1080p test clip from - while contrast did not pump, it leads - along with color regrade - to a strange phenomenon, like the colorized black&white films, where things were not completely colored but some black&white "splotches" remain here and there - albeit this happened in few shots and even if many of this discolorization problems were small enough to not be noticed, our eyes and brain perception tell us that something went wrong... enough to ruin the whole presentation.
So, decided to went back and start from scratch; instead of trying to reach as much closest shots as possible, I've decided to use the UHD luma, tweaked of course, to avoid those colorization problems; indeed now there are more shots brighter or darker than before, but there shold be no more problems - regrade should be remain the same, more or less, and the whole presentation should be more "natural" - I think, I hope.

An example - top V4, bottom V5 (look at the hand):

Comparisons
V4 Vs V5: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/135584
DVD Vs V5: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/135585
as you can see, difference is not night and day, theatrical spirit remains almost the same (as DVD), yet it should be "natural" now.

So, at the end, less close to DVD than before, yet without problem... (only time will tell - after two weeks spent on test and encodings, filling my new 2TB spare drive, I strongly hope so! Big Grin )
