[Released] Mad Max (1979) original color timing & mix
v7 looks really good, spoRv!

@Stamper: Is your DVD preservation available right now? Also is the HDTV floating around anywhere?
Finest kind.

Did you try with a german release that already did the HDR to BD conversion?

It may be your way to avoid the weird conversion of colors.

"weird conversion of colors"... the fact is, there is not a single way to convert HDR 10bit rec2020 to SDR 8bit rec709 (nor the "right" one, AFAIK) - even if results are, more or less, the same, there will be always differences between various methods. Said so, if you refer to less-than-perfect regrade of few shots, it happens for various reasons, for example:
  • sources used (negative scan Vs interpositive Vs final print)
  • difference in color space, dinamic, bit depth
  • difference in frame size, geometry
  • different coded used (HEVC Vs MPEG-2)
  • absence or presence of grain
add to this that automatic color grading match is NEVER perfect, in particular when frame sizes differ so much between source and color reference.

So, given the former problems, I am very happy with the final result. Again, not perfect, but much better than UHD (converted to SDR) and overall better than DVD - the latter may have some superior shots, but also has some color problems in few shots (magenta blanket, overpumped red), while the regrade has bigger frame size and far better details. A compromise? Sure! I like this compromise more than DVD - the spirit is retained. And I'm aware of its (now very few) problems, and I can surely live with them.

Now, to get an even better version, I thought to use the regraded chroma along with the UHD HDR luma - I guess if there is a good way to convert SDR to HDR, though...

I thought the 4K HDR version looked decent, did I miss something?

Have you rendered out a final version of this? I thought the sample looked very nice. I can't wait for a high bitrate version; with the mono audio it will be the nicest way to see the film.

Away from PC, should be back today, I hope

UHD test clip (50s, x265 3840x2160 SDR 10bit, no audio) - if these settings are right, they will be used for the final version; tester needed to know the following:
  • regrade quality
  • encoding quality
  • UHD-BD compliance

Could only watch a few frames, of it, but looks good to me!

The encoding looks good to me. However, I noticed that it's stretched vertically compared to the earlier sample. Here's a comparison: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/1005

Yes, I know... I noticed that the 2.35:1 of the UHD was a bit compressed, while the TODD-AO 2.20:1 was too much stretched... so, I went with 2.25:1 - that was more or less the same aspect ratio of the DVD, taking in account the fact it is cropped - I wrote about this in the post #125

Well, encoding right now, should be ready for tomor... today! Wink
