[Request] Scarface (1983) 4.0 original mix
#11
Thanks for the reply. That makes sense.

Did you ever get hold of the 4.0 DVD Scarface mix? I'm pretty sure I have the UK Collector's Edition disc with this track on it.

I've checked Universal's International Blu-ray release and it's the same disc for all the countries you listed above. The english track is DTS 2.0 at 448kbps per scan bellow. I don't know if it's indeed the original mix, but it's the same track available on the original US Blu-ray. But if you're interested, I can get it for you in few days, just send me a PM.

I'm also trying to put together this complete version of Scarface mixes, and no doubt the LD track would be the one to go after.

And just for the sake of information, the DTS-HD MA 7.1 track presented on both the original blu-ray and the remastered one are the same, even though they have different bitrates. Once decoded to PCM they result in the same track, and it's not judging by the ear or the eye (wave lenghs), I've checked with a file comparison software. So it's just a different encode of the same track, and both are in sync with the UHD.

Edit: Update 2:

WOW it hadn't occurred to me the the UHD and remastered BD have this same DTS 2.0 track but in 748kbps!

I still don't know if it's the original mix, or just a downconversion of the remix, but this should render the previous BD track useless.
But even if it's the original mix, it's probably filtered and re-EQ'ed compared to the LD track.

As someone who owns the original Blu-ray I can confirm is the original mix but compressed.

But stated the early DVDs have a 4.0 discrete mix.
They may be in Pal only, but getting them to regular speed and pitch is a no brainer.

The 5.1 from the SE is from the M&E track because that is all there is on the stereo channels.
The surround and lfe are produced from the other tracks (lfe is just the total mix with cut off), and the center is clearly extracted from the Dolby Surround and doctored further to fit.

The french 5.1 is crap, they just put the mono mix on all tracks, and applied different processing on it, like removing all bass from center and boosting it on the others channels.

I'm very interested in getting the original Pal french disc back if it's 4.0 as stated it's unique as only being the releases (in foreign countries only) with the limited 70mm  4.0 Mag track (actually, it could have been a 4.2 "baby boom" track, given its release year).

My brother owns the original special edition DVD. But considering the original theatrical re-release had altered sound effects and 2006 DVD has better sound for the new mix according to some people, but I’m not like some people. I know the SE Mix is not well liked among some DVD reviewer‘s but I did see a lot of people complaining that the original sound effects weren’t there like they wanted to have the original sound design but in 5.1 so I get the unique set up.

Did anyone manage to get the 4.0 track and sync it? I thought I saw a post about it the other day but maybe someone deleted it? (either that or I’m going mad..)

just a question because i'm getting confused with the audio mixes

Is the DTS-MA 7.1 / DTS-X mixes form the Blu-ray / 4K UHD based on the 5.1 mix that was done for the Platinum Edition DVD (newly recorded gun sound FX) or are they based from the original mix (no newly recorded sound FX)

Got the 4K UHD on the way from amazon.com (original burnt in captions unlike the UK version)

You're not going mad. That was my post. I deleted it because I pointed out some differences between the DVD 4.0 and the UHD 2.0 only to later discover that they were due to an error in my set up. But I do have the DVD 4.0 synced to the UHD. If you're interested in checking it out drop me a PM.

Bigrob, the BD/UHD surround tracks have the new sound effects. The UHD 2.0 is the original mix with matrixed surround channels. The DVD 4.0 is the original mix with discrete surround channels.

i got rid of the 5.1 from the old SE DVD that contained the original SFX
it was mixed too low and flat compared to the dts on the 4k.

Reading through this thread, I'm a bit confused on what the DVD 4.0 track contains.

(2019-11-22, 10:15 PM)Stamper Wrote: - Original english DTS 5.1 remix with original sound stems
I synced it to the 4K. the 4.0 tracks are great and use the M&E stems, but the center is doctored and hacked to ressemble a regular center track. Nonetheless, it's better than the remix.

Stamper, were you referring to the 4.0 track when you say "the center is doctored and hacked to resemble a regular center track"? Wouldn't the 4.0 be LCRS, i.e. it already contains a discrete center?

Was it a typo for 5.1 judging from these descriptions on that track?

The stereo LR play the music only, with some sound effects, and really widen the stage. It makes the music shine, the inverse of the 7.1 revisitation which IMHO is as bad as the Terminator remix.

Hmm Turisu, are you saying the 4.0 is a split surround configuration (L/R/Ls/Rs?) instead of the conventional Dolby Stereo / LCRS?

For more context, here's what Brett Cameron said on BR:

Brett C Wrote:The film was originally Dolby A/mono on theatrical release with a 4-Track Mag stereo version for limited engagements. The mag version was issued as a 4.0 DD track on the first DVD release for R2/R4 markets, albeit in Pal. When the 2003 re-release was remixed to 5.1, the 4.0 was gone. The UHD 2.0 is more than likely a new fold-down of the 4-Track Mag mix.

Hi, no I was refering to the 5.1 DTS remix. I can understand the write up why confusing, I meant the L/R Ls/Rs in the 5.1 were using stems, whereas the center channel is some doctored hack job.
