[Request] Tracking down theatrical mixes

THE DOORS - looks like AC-3 5.1 on the LD is the theatrical CDS mix. Anybody have it - would love to sync it to the UHD!

Oh, thanks for this! Will the quality be the same as on the LD? I think I read somewhere, the bitrate should be pretty much the same or even better? Also, could the Special Edition from Artesian contain the same track as the 1997 (Live/Artesian) DVD?

Most early DVDs are LaserDisc ports (anamorpic and non-anamorphic to a degree), so the audio tracks basically sound the same as their LD counterparts. Most 5.1 tracks on early DVDs had a bitrate of 384kbs which is the same most LDs had, while some had 448kbs which is slightly higher than LD. However, DD stereo/1.0 tracks on early DVDs ran at far lower bitrates than say the same track as a 384kbs AC3 on LD. DVD spec Dolby encoding in general is much different than LD AC3, which alots for algorithms such as Dynamic Range Control and other processing features that can drastically effect overall quality compared to the same track on LD or even BD.

In regards to THE DOORS everything through the 2 disc SE DVD I have should have the same mix-I believe it was CDS 5.0 and Lionsgate remixed it for 7.1 for the later releases and BD and given my experiences with their 7.1 upmixes it likely sucks.

Thank you! According to LDDB it was a CDS 4.0 mix, so they repurposed it to 5.1.

My guilty pleasure, King Kong (1976) - was it released in stereo theatrically? I would think so, since it's a big production. Although I've seen some film cells and from what I can tell they have a mono audio track on them only. LDs were only ever released in mono. Also, no stereo mentioned on the film itself, or anywhere else. Although people on some forums say it was released in stereo and in 70mm - and even in Sensurround outside the US. However, the early Paramount DVD also has 2.0 surround track - which could be the original stereo? So far from what I could gather:

Mono - available on LD.
Stereo - Paramount R1 DVD might have it?
6 track 70mm - could this be 5.1 track from the above mentioned Paramount R1 DVD too? Or is it a remix?
6 track 70mm Sensurround - probably a confusion, coming from the Universal "Legend Of King Kong" being developed at the same time but then canceled.

Both US and French/International cuts of Leon were a 5.1 native mix in Dolby Digital, but also had alternate Dolby Surround LRCS mixes done for theaters not equipped with DD and for TV/VHS versions. The US version also had a theatrical DTS 5.1 mix, but I don't think that ever had a release anywhere not even a DTS LD. The DTS track that debuted on the Superbit DVD and spanned up to the 2009 BD is said to be different than the theatrical DTS, probably optimized for home theater systems, but is also said to be vastly superior overall to the messy, reverberated Atmos mix on the MI4K BD and the UHDs.

Re. LEON. The theatrical poster has the Dolby Stereo Digital logo on it. I guess that mix was finalised after the film had been locked? Same case with Speed which was released a few months before. The end credits are useful but don't always tell the full story. So question remains which audio track for Leon is the best? The Sony DVDs have both DTS and DD5.1 tracks so presumably one of those?

The new Max Max 2 and 3 UHD discs have what is supposed to be the original audio mixes along with a new Atmos mix, however, the 5.1 and 2.0 tracks appear to just be fold downs of the Atmos audio. Does anyone know if the 5.1 tracks from the Bluray trilogy set are base on the original 70mm 6 tracks?
