You mean 1.44:1? That is the IMAX format. 1.33:1 should be gone by now it's a TV news format, never was a film format. I think I saw the director saying he aimed for IMAX not for 1960's TV.

It still pisses me off, when they remaster TV shows in 1.33:1 instead of 1.37:1 when no 4/3 TV is in use anymore (except in the bedrooms of crazy people like us).

The trailer is exactly 1.33:1. I imagine his thought may be that he produces in 1,33:1 and thus it will also fit somewhat well on IMAX. Guess we'll see.

It's crazy, if the guy in charge of those 200 millions plus blockbusters doesn't know the difference between 1.37:1 and 1.33:1.

1.33:1 needs to be eradicated from existence (except newsclips), as when you do the 1.77:1 Blu-ray, you can frame anything between those black bars like 1.66:1 or 1.37:1 instead of framing a crap 1.33:1 for TVs that don't exist anymore.

Those are some harsh words haha. I personally have no problem with it whatsoever. Even the Blu Ray standard supports 1.33:1 (afaik) and for example older documentaries use that when restored sometimes, or at least I've seen it once. In my eyes it's a creative choice like any other.

Mind you, on a normal 16:9 display with a 4:3 image you actually still have less black area than with a letterboxed cinemascope, tho the difference is not overly significant.

Edit: Well that's odd. I correctly remembered that 1440x1080 is supported on Blu Rays, however apparently only in anamorphic mode, which ends up being 16:9 too. What a strange choice.

Edit 2: I'd also like to remark that a fully exposed unmatted image on 35mm is actually much higher than even 1.33:1. And for my personal taste, an image can never be high enough haha. And considering that matting in cinemas was apparently often or at least sometimes done with hand-filed apertures, I think there's a good chance some cinemas were closer to 1,33:1 than 1,37

It appears I'm conflicted with this news!
While the whole "Snyder Cut" has been my world for the past year, this is the first piece of news has left me a little cold!

Why do I accept the 'scope' AR on a 16.9 panel with black bars top/bottom, but I'm disappointed with them left/right?

I'm literally debating paying for a stream but viewing a rip so I can crop in!

Not sure about B&W either!
Mad Max and Logan we're not improved by it's lack of color.
But if that's what the director wants who am I to argue.

I like black and white versions, and can see the purity in it, alas the Mad Max Fury Road suffers from exposing how sharpened and "hot" some shots are, leading to an inconsistent presentation, while Logan puts me off from the get go with the opening night scene which looks like it's shot with a DV cam.

I think there should be more attention paid to the bw look, but it seems often they just expedite the color timing of it.

I wonder if the blu is actually going to be encoded as 4:3, or 1:78:1 with a 4:3 image inside it. My thinking is if they actually encode it as 4:3, a lot of people who have their TVs set as forced 16:9 are going to be watching it very stretched out!

Idk about 4K but a normal Blu Ray apparently doesn't support 4:3, seems I was wrong about that. It only supports anamorphic 4:3 which means a 16:9 image squeezed into a 4:3 image.
