[Help] Do you lose EX when editing 5.1EX?
#11
I don't know what editing you require but if it's simple cutting/looping then you can probably do it losslessly in some thing like eac3to/delaycut, this will keep the original encode intact along with the EX flag (I think)

Yes, exactly. Some simple syncing. Will look into this then, thanks!

The rear center info is matrixed into the original mix. You can't get rid of it unless you're remixing from the ground up. Most tracks aren't flagged anyways. Many films on bluray do not have these tracks listed or flagged and are just plain 5.1 but if you listen for it or decode it out the info is still there.

That is correct.

As others have mentioned, the flag is a form of metadata that instructs your Audio/Video receiver to activate the DD-EX processor that takes the DD-EX bitstream and converts it to audio and sends it to 6 speakers (with a center rear speaker) and a subwoofer.  Without the flag, the user has to manually activate DD-EX processor to get 7.1 surround sound.

No matter what, the matrixed-center channel stored in the rear left and right channels will not disappear after transcoding, whether you decide to play it on WAV or transcode to conventional AC-3.
