I remember the R1 MGM SE DVD has a sync issue when we discover the Terminator POV: we hear the robotic system before we see it. Also, after the sex scene, audio cuts abruptly to the Terminator on its bike, while it's an audio crossfade during the fade to black on the Laserdisc used by Team Blu on their project some years ago, and you can hear the bike before you see it. I don't know which one is correct, but they are different.

I can't find it now but I think I vaguely remember some chat about that ages ago, was the conclusion at the time not that this was a reel change and this was what it was actually like in theatres? As in, the bike noise was being used as a "bridge" between the reels because it's a repetitive noise that helps mask the transition? Not sure about the other one you mentioned though and I could very well be making this up. I don't think so though. (Equally, I could be remembering correctly but whoever said it was wrong, I dunno.)

The quality of the MGM DVD mono + The loud and beefy sound effects of Image mono + restored and stereo music = me wanting a new 5.1 mix with the original mono sound effects from MGM. Edit: I get your preferences. It’s just that Jim wanting to turn the first film’s sound into T2 just makes me frustrated. I noticed there are some mixes in the international Blu-ray, like the Hungarian track, which are stereo instead of 5.1
I listened to them and compared with the 5.1 folded down to stereo, and they don't sound the same exactly so those are genuine stereo remixes (from the 5.1). I was wondering if I could use those stereo mixes, to produce a stereo mix from the mono, as these elimate the rear effect. However it's pretty hard to reproduce the mono mix as it exist without having the separate stems. Due to it's mono nature, sounds that were localised, say, center, in the original, are louder than they were on the mixing table back in 84 when played in stereo. That's a phenomenon that happens when a stereo or Dolby Surround mix is folded down to mono, it changes the place of the sounds, and thus their volume depending on their EQ. So the brutality of the original mono mix, is down to having been down very fast on the go without having the time to fine tune it, and all sounds being center. If you widen them sounds, even if you had the stems, you lower the impact of the mix, so you would have to rework each separate element hard to make it sounds brutal. That's why also the 5.1 and stereo sounds so wimpy, not just the changes of sounds.

KK650s' regrade paired with the mono + LFE lossless track has been my go to version for a long time. That Chace remix track looks really interesting and I hope I get the chance to
compare them in the future. I had not heard about the U-matic grade until now, also very interesting! Colors look great, but I agree about the image looking too un-natural. Especially the shot of Arnie in the gunstore. A more balanced take on that grade coupled with the best sounding mono tracks, that would be the ultimate purist edition! |
