[Proposal] The Terminator [1984] Ultimate Purist Collection
#91
Thank you monisriz. They don't sync without an initial delay of 22 frames according to reports, which is between the original Blu-ray and the new UHD.

+22 frames indeed, from Blu-ray with MGM logo opening to UHD: that's +918ms. I already made my own remux.

Has any of our audio specialists examined the DTS HDMA 2.0 mono on the UHD, supposedly original mix, to see if it's better than the Laserdisc PCM? It does have the original Arnie's gun sound effect. I don't know yet if it's the domestic or international mono and wonder if it was heavily filtered and if some frequencies were destroyed in the process.

Apparently, the mono on the UHD is a mixbag of the domestic and the international. I thought it was the domestic based on the scene of the T-800 burning coming off the truck at the end, and then based on the bike sound that transitions between the sex scene and the T-800 on his bike, it's the international mix when you hear the bike only when you see it and not used as a bridge between the two shots during the fade to black.

Reading the first post in this thread makes me want to search for a copy of the Image DVD to buy. Especially since I only have the 2001 MGM SE, the hologram style cover release and not the more generic font one, and the USA BD. I do want to buy the current UHD release, at least it has the original mono mix as lossless 2.0, but not when it's at $25 and it's not much of a huge priority for me right now to get it. Also interested in this project, especially the LD PCM mono, etc., it's quite awesome!

Thank you. I think the next step to truly finish this project would be for me to sync the Image DVD 2.1 track.
I couldn't originally due to a frame rate issue as I sync by visuals.
However this was fixed with the help of Williarob.
So now I have a good source to sync to.
Also I could make one bird two stones and sync at the same time the Image DVD reissue which is 1.0 only.

I haven’t fully memorized every difference between international and domestic mixes, but I can say the UHD seems like a lesser source several generations away or something that’s been heavily processed…Or both. It sounds OK if a bit canned and with dialogue a bit harsh when you’re watching the UHD if you didn’t know any better. But I just did some basic comparisons especially with the 1991 laser disc afterwards and it’s night and day. It makes the UHD mono sound like a bad cassette dub. The 1991 LD sounds like a direct transfer made off of a magnetic master or something and the clarity difference in the dialogue alone is astounding.

That LD really is great

I don't think it's a lesser source, as they obviously used separate tracks for music, effects and dialogue, but indeed, there's a processing going on which would figure once you put the multi tracks in a modern software for remixing.

They probably added digital EQ effects on the separate tracks for clean up and other tweaks. I muxed the .1 to the 2.0 mono audio just to experiment, and it looks to me they mono is synced to the Atmos remix to the milliseconds (ie all foley timing matches). So I'm happy we have another one to choose from, and where the .1 might actually fit without creating audio problems.

I'm fine with it, as we have a profusion of riches when it comes to the mono audio of the film. More problematic is the AI process that destroys the photography by rending sharp out of focus elements, redraw logos and texts so that they are garbled, and add/enhance pores and holes in faces to the point it seems Paul Winfield has fungus.
