Cinema DTS / Home Video Mixes - Waveform Comparisons

I've lately been interested in how 5.1 home video audio mixes across various formats compare to their theatrical counterparts. So I've taken the cinema DTS tracks that I've been able to find or that others have kindly shared with me and done some visual waveform comparisons.

All cinema DTS tracks have had their surround channels attenuated to -3Db and LFE channel boosted +3Db for pre-1999 movies and +6Db for post-1999 movies. For more information on why this is necessary see this wonderfully informative thread by pipefan413.

So I'll start with The Matrix.

try to Convert the DVD's AC-3 Mix to FLAC or Wav and then analyze the wav form of the converted version (converting it strips the dialnorm), because i'm not sure if the program that you used to analyze the waveform includes the dialnorm attenuation when analyzing AC-3 tracks

I thought Dialnorm just affected the volume level of the track. In any case I'll try a WAV conversion and see if the resulting waveform is any different.

Yeah I had naively assumed these 7.1 mixes on UHD’s would be close to the theatrical 5.1s but clearly not. Would be very interested to see Casino & Carlito’s Way (once it’s out) comparisons - can send you the UHD audio for both if you want.

I'd love to do both of those. Unfortunately I don't have the cinema DTS tracks for either.

This. They're almost always some revisionist remix.

Also has anyone synced TLW Cinema DTS to the UHD? If not I'll gladly do it if someone can provide me with the files.

Remix is the name of the game now. Some studios are producing original tracks (so they say) like Sony. They stated that Last Action Hero got the original SDDS mix in 5.1 form. I’m not familiar with it much but it sounded incredible. Same goes with Superman.

I'm not sure Sony's original audio claims can be trusted since the so-called OG tracks on the new Labyrinth UHD turned out to be remixes.

Could you compare theatrical DTS to JPN Blu Ray DTS HD for the 1999 film Sleepy Hollow?

Ok so removing Dialnorm makes a big difference to the dynamics of AC-3 tracks. But, as I'm comparing home video releases, I feel like I should continue to use the original Dialnorm'd tracks as this is what was released on the disc. I don't really want to go down the rabbit hole of trying to create 'improved' mixes.

Stripping dialnorm shouldn't change the dynamic range in any way, just remove an arbitrary negative gain, usually -4dB

What was that compared against? Could this be a 70mm change like star wars
