Ripping HD DVD Evo Files?

Has anyone got any experience with ripping these?

I don't have a drive but a friend ripped the TC of Troy with AnyDVD and sent me the files. The rip process seemed to go well without any errors.

First thing I did is attempted to demux with TS Muxer. The later versions of TSMuxer gave an error about not being able to read all of the files and the only option I had was a SD file. I then tried one of the earlier versions and that gave me the option of a HD stream. I demuxed that, it gave me a VC1 file but all I got from it was garbled video.

I then tried Evodemux, that gave me a message about the file being encrypted and that it needed decrypting first:

Evodemux still let me proceed but again garbled video.

I then tried a program called BackupHDDVDGUI_0.5. That has a key database (189 movies in total) and it lists Troy as an option. I had to make an ISO file from the digital files I have, mount that and then point BackupHDDVDGUI_0.5 to that drive. That then gave me the following error:

The disc hash for Troy in the BackupHDDVDGUI_0.5 database is different, it's F1E5D1838BC981C160DBD54ABEE09F7D39513CB7. It looks like the DC and TC of Troy were released on HDDVD, so I'm thinking maybe they only decrypted the DC and the key was never cracked for the TC?

The other program I've read about people using is DVDFab, but that didn't recognise any of the files or the ISO.

I did some HD-DVD demuxes some years ago. I did use EAC3TO (originally just with command-line, later with a GUI). Its not that hard, find EAC3TO, and a gui (I used HdBrStreamExtractor).

Maybe you should check, if your friend really decrypted it with anyDVD, maybe he had HD-DVD support deactivated in his options, and the Files are still encrypted. If so, it might work to mount the rip as an ISO, and use anyDVD on that mounted drive with activated HD-DVD support.

The best way to make a proper MKV out of a HD-DVD is to use eac3to demux option. It will join the movie files, get rid of the pulldown flag, etc. Once finished remux to MKV or M2TS

There is also a theatrical cut Blu-ray of "Troy". Is the HD-Dvd better?

I found this thread at avsforum useful some years back. Not sure if any of the software mentioned still does this stuff. I had the external HD-DVD drive made for the X-box which could be hooked up to a PC without any issues. Windows 7 saw it as a typical CD-Rom drive.

This is what I was interested in, I already have a copy of the Russian blu. To be honest they look identical, same number of frames, both VC1 and both have the same size elementary video streams.

The BD and HD-DVD from early years of Warner are identical. No benefit. Only Universal HD-DVD where better at the beginning, since many of the BDs suffered from DNR while the HD-DVDs didn't.

Also, stay away from the theatrical cut of Troy. The DC is far superior.

I still think it's worth preserving. The Cinema DTS for example would only sync to the theatrical and the theatrical has a very different color grading when compared to the DC.

The TC has a very slight tiny touch of magenta noticeable in the sky (this, or I'm starting to be color blind or more probably my monitor isn't perfectly optimized anymore) but it's MUUUCH better than that orange&teal mess!

Agree, the TC deserves a project!
