IMPORTANT - staff change and move to a Fanrestore.com domain
#61
I think the gradient is just not a great idea ... not sure.. I'm not a graphic designer but it seems dated especially compared to how sleek the rest of the website is.

FanRes is dead, long live FanRes!

I was always a privacy maniac... on FanRes as well as everywhere else; repository was just the last example.

This is the main reason I did not disclose why I was offline for a long time - @PDB not for years; for sure from September 2015 to March/April 2016; always online since February 2017, when I got my second PC - and why I wanted to migrate to another hosting so quickly.

Well, I was in and out the hospitals for months at the time; then lately, after my father had three heart attacks during few months, doctors discovered it was due to a genetic disorder with me having 50% probability to have too; frankly I did not made a test for it, because what's the point to know that I may die suddenly, if there is not a cure (yet)? As omicron will hit me sooner or later, without knowing if I have chances to survive, I thought to make some changes ASAP. Egoistically, I must admit.

Someone could think that it's just a way to have the sympathy of the users; actually I did not disclosed it for this very reason - I wanted to be treated as usual, a pain-in-the-butt old-dinosaur, and I don't expect anything less! But I think now it's time to give some explanations. Funny is that the only one that I kinda revealed something was @Feallan, when in one of the last mails I've sent him I wrote "when I'll be dead, I left a letter to contact you and the admin with domain access" (I wanted to write mods, not admin)

But please try to be in my shoes: I started a community from scratch, then I had health problems, and I was asked to make an almost unknown member to be admin to help - and I accepted for the good of the community; then he offered to host it - and I accepted, losing more than two years of hosting already paid - for the good of the community. Then the first time, after seven years, I wanted to make some changes - that, for the record, could be easily reverted - against the other opinions, I had the others against me...

So, as usually - due to my temperament, cantankerousity, and so on, I was a fury and asked Feallan to quit; then when I steamed off I apologized, asked him to send me the backup so I can move it to my hosting but without excluding him as admin - and if he did not agree, to go public and asked who should have the last word.

Then, instead of an answer, the day after he just decided to buy a new domain, and talked to the two mods about his intentions; none of them sent me a message to ask what was going on. I felt stabbed in the back not once, but three times.

I made my mistakes, but I think you made yours. The community is not mine, but it's not yours either. Is of the community itself.

I think lack of communication, "my d**k is longer than yours" syndrome, and something else, lead to this incident. I apologize.

I want to publicily thanks Feallan to have hosted the forum for many years at his expanse, PDB and DoomBot to have spent so many hours to grow the community, and all the FanRes members!

Now, FanRes was on its domain for seven years, and it gained some recognition around the web, and for the good of the community I think it would be better to remain on it; if the admins here think the same and that we could find a way together, transparently, to solve everything, I'm open to talk. F**k, we are a restoration forum, would be silly if we can't restore itself!

If not, worry not; I always acted for the good of the community - despite what someone may think - and, as I don't want a diaspora, I'll not fight anymore; most probably I'll quit altogether the fan restoration world (I think I gave enough of my lifetime to it in the last seven years) and I'll spend my energies on something completely different, possibly offline, and this will be my last post here, I promise.

Heart Last words: a big hug to anyone who supported and endured me during all these years! Heart

Why would it have been a good idea to move Fanres to your hosting?

I would be all in favour of the forum returning to fanres.com, but why do you feel that you need to make an ultimatum over it?

While things are getting fixed could we please fix the embedded image previews? That stopped working like a year ago for me..

I am sorry to hear about your health problems, I was not aware of those, when you said that part about dying I thought it was just a figure of speech. I hope you don't have this genetic disorder and wish you well.

Thank you for your kind words, and I also thank you for kickstarting this community, we obviously wouldn't be here without you and remember that you will always have a home for your projects here, if you decide to continue making them. As for taking advantage of Fanres's recognition, I propose to have the fanres.com and forum.fanres.com redirect to the new domain, this way all links posted elsewhere on the internet and all crawlers would pick up on it, which would make the traffic increase. I couldn't agree on moving back to the old domain if that's what you meant, as that would effectively nullify what we've done recently and create even more confusion. Ultimately Fanres and Fanrestore are similar names, so any new users coming from other websites probably wouldn't think too much about it. In case you don't log in in a day or two, I'll reach out to you with this message via e-mail you provided.

I believe this is because the plugin stopped working during one of the updates and author abandoned it, I'll try to look for some alternative later

As for the logo-thing: I also agree that the current version looks a bit dated. The gradient, the color and the font itself reminds me a bit of the 90s. No offense. Wink

I also don't have a definite idea yet, but tried to give it a quick shot myself. Maybe it's something to start from (definitely not perfect), but if you don't like it at all that's fine for me too. Smile

I like it, too. Gives me an idea: to use the 4K Ultra HD logo as basis and put "Fan" in a black square with "Restore" in a longer white rectangle next to it, using the same font as the 4K Ultra HD of course.
