Proposal: The James Cameron Project

Yeah X5 pointed out when the Hulu version first appeared, that the framing on both were exactly the same. A preview that no work was done.

The pictures I posted on one of the pages show that to be true. The 4K just crops a tiny bit off the top and bottom. The sad thing is the HDTV is a beautiful transfer. I might have to upscale that myself. I wondering if I could do any better.

Haven't seen it yet but I guess it has to be so. Which is strange because there was a 4K-SDR Web based on the BD transfer of the SE of Aliens some years ago that had a tiny, tiny bit of more info then the BD.

Seems so. What a sad conclusion to a long wait. It is rare to see a bad 4k UHD transfer except the work put out by Cameron. It is consistently bad work. Odd coming from the man with such high standards.

At least T2 got a new transfer as poor as it is. Someone did the work before it was destroyed.

Bring on the T1 UHD! Let's kill 'em all!

The HD aliens SE I have has more details and resolution than the Abyss 4k

It makes sense because Titanic had tons of work done to erase stuff, replace skies etc in 2K for the 3D release.
They didn't went back to redo the work, they just took the 2K master and tweaked it over the years with the HFR and Dolby re-releases.
Also, I think I saw on Titanic some parts of camera movements that screams HFR to me.
I had to check my settings to be sure that someone didn't put back in motion flow accidentaly.
So this master is the HFR version just pasted to UHD.

The HDR 2023 DCP was covered in DNR, I projected it.

Basically, all these pasts JC films have been upgraded in the past with 2K DI, so they are in the same state as any recent film finished in 2K like Terminator Dark Fate. None of them, except True Lies, can be scanned again in 4K, as it would involve redoing all the fixes again in 4K. True Lies could have escaped that, but it's obviously just whatever old 2K scan they had on file, just re color timed. Notice how True Lies image is flat, with no dimentionality, compared to the older color timings. They just took the raw 2K files, and quickly adjusted color and contrast. (it also lacks color saturation).

I'm surprised people here are so shocked by what JC has done, especially after T2's new master. Even with the first Terminator and Aliens you can see the DNR under the added grain.

I was so right to be worried that JC will fuck up his movies on 4K Sad

Can we make a list of all the available releases, including custom made like taking a WEBDL and add 35mm color correction, which one is the best for each JC movie?

Aliens is the same AI upscaling; not as bad as TL but not good. Around Abyss levels. It looks like an upscaled BD.

(Just compared, it's basically the same colors)
