Quote:When the director came in to view the finished result, he decided to bring in his own personal TV set to view the transfer. All the engineers and telecine operators at the facility were aghast, and tried mightily to explain to the director that there’s no way a $1,000 TV set can reproduce the subtleties of a $10,000 broadcast monitor, but the director wouldn’t hear of it.

Actually I do think this anecdote was when he cared. He optimised his transfers for then TVs.
There were a few bumps like the Aliens anecdote, fixed with the next one, but it all started to go downhill in the early 2000 with the T1 transfer with blown up whites, then the T2 remaster which was yellow. Then it was free for all.

If I may add after this, there were directors who color timed their films on a 10 000 $ bucks monitor and a cheap 400 $ connected at the same time.
The goal was that it looks good on both, and that was on point.

Yup, recording engineers play their mixes in the nice studio monitors then go and listen to it again in their car, strike a balance between both. I once mixed an entire album in headphones and heard it later on loudspeakers and it sounded like massive garbage

They pulled the first squeeze LD as it was "wrong" all the internet (apart from me) believed that and worshipped Jimbo.
Then we see the print scans and the first LD was correct!

Swinging back to the DCP presentation.

I regraded the SE "4K" Web-DL to what I saw with the more blue DCP presentation. I also cleaned up the compression a bit, did some edge soften to mitigate the AI edges and added grain for the hell of it.

Need to sync the PCM from the LD.

Yesterday I watched SE in 4K and I had the feeling that I was seeing it for the first time, I really liked it) Your color correction is very interesting.

Definitely like that colour change PDB. The grain helps as well as the 4K web-dl is so de-grained (watched some of it the other day).

Some of the faces look a bit soft but I guess theres only so much you can do to correct the mess Cameron's made. Would you look to use the older HDTV and combine it with the SE shots from the web-dl for a final project?

Glad I didn't delete the CrowEyes1121 SEHD of The Abyss when I heard the official disc was coming.
