The Last of the Mohicans - Original Theatrical Cut - BD-50 - Shadoe
#31
I just wonder if Fox (Who Owns the US Rights to this movie, and they funded half of the film) is going to release an R1 Blu-Ray with all three cuts in the near future, it wouldn't cost them much money, and the fanbase for this film is very big. Hopefully they can keep the original 2.0 Surround mix instead of dropping it like so many other studios do.

Also released in a limited edition in France on November 5th: both theatrical and extended DC cuts. It's claimed to be a new master. Unclear at this point if both cuts will be from the "new" master, and also unclear what's their definition of "new" is. Could very well be the same "new" as the 2010 Region A edition.

The Director’s Definitive Edition on the Fox BD is reported to be a 4k scan finished at 2k like the 2010 Alien BD. The Australian BD is slated to use the same master for the Definitive Edition in their 2 disc set, but it's odd the French are claiming a new master for one of the versions. Maybe Morgan Creek (who now controls distribution rights worldwide) obtained a newer master that Fox silently made before the Disney merger completed?

The Theatrical cut scan is based on an old HD master created by Warner for their overseas DVDs and that HDTV rip floating around. Highly likely that will be the same old master on both BDs.

wasn't the theatrical cut of The Last Of The Mohicans available on US Netflix sometime ago? I remember it having Different color timing than the BD and the Expanded DVD edition.

I think Fox will eventually release the Theatrical Version and the two definitive cuts in 4k UHD in the US sometime in the future. Maybe they will implement seamless branching like with the Alien UHD BD

It is, but it was the same master as that 25fps HDTV rip Shadoe used for his BD50 remaster. The HDTVrip and the Netflix stream lack the Fox/Warner logos and only open with Morgan Creek's, which means Fox no longer owns US rights and are with Morgan Creek, who will likely licence it out to Sony for a upcoming BD with ether the TC or the DDE.

The French Édition Limitée arrived in the mail today.  As expected, the "version cinéma" is a decent encoding of the old Warner master, probably the best we are ever going to get: it's doubtful that anyone will have the inclination to fob off customers with a UHD encoding of it.  As such, the set is worth getting if you want that cut of the film.  The word over at blu-ray.com is that the equivalent Australian set has a worse encoding of the same master, and there seems no reason to doubt it.

EDIT:  The FR (top) BD definitely has a higher bitrate than the AUS (bottom) BD.

There are English and French DTS-HD MA 5.1 tracks and a DTS-HD MA English 2.0 track (presumably a DTS encoding of the LPCM 2.0 on the AUS BD.).  I've not done any volume matching, but this is what the spectograms look like:

FR TC BD English 2.0:

AUS TC BD English 2.0:

FR TC BD English 5.1:

For comparison, here's the 5.1 from the FR DDC BD...

...apart from the absence of the ice-pick lobotomy at ~8kHz. it looks similar to the 5.1 on the TC.

The FR BD's 2.0 doesn't strike me as anything to write home about.  The LD PCM will probably sound better.

The second disc is, of course, the "Director's Definitive Cut" and looks the same as the US and UK releases -- no surprises there.   Unless Mann decides to recut the film yet again, the inevitable UHD BD will most likely be the Director's Defintive Cut in 4k.  If we're lucky, something will be done about the levels.

At present, the best prospect for an updated fan project is a regrade of the UHD BD (whenever that shows up) with sections taken from the French disc and some LD audio.

Does anyone know if this is an accurate summary of the difference in the cuts:

Much like Robin Hood I was hoping someone would take the superior masters of the DC BD cuts and re-create the TCs adding some PCM fomr the LDs. Robin Hood looks lke an easy job. This looks more complex. But it might be a fun job.
