I'd imagine a good number of "5.1 mixes" are upmixes dating back to the DVD days. A lot of these films getting 5.1 tracks never had them to begin during their theatrical run, and unless they find the 4.0 masters, the 2 channel master is likely all that remains. If the 4.0 masters exist, a good 5.1 track can be had for sure. I'm not a fan of upmixing a stereo master to 5.1 because I'd rather have my receiver do that work but I get why it's done.

I wish there was more detail for the audio masters that are provided for a given release for us nerds. Criterion used to note stuff like that on their LDs all the time and it was always appreciated. Of course, I don't know if I would even trust some working at the labels to understand it all, so we might get bad or incomplete information.
