[Idea] "Commando director's cut" remastered
#1
Hey, guys.

In a not too distant future, I intend to recreate the director's cut based on the AMZN remaster of the theatrical cut and the extra scenes, colormatched of course, from the DC Blu-ray that I will use as timeline, too, so that I can keep the Blu-ray audio and subtitle tracks. It shouldn't be too difficult, as there's only 2 frames to remove near the beginning of the remaster when the general leaves and Alyssa turns towards Arnie to conform it to the theatrical Blu-ray and then add the extra and extended scenes. I already tested the colormatching tool on the alternate Alyssa Milano scene and it works pretty well.

Already did this when I originally sourced the remaster from AMC (Amzn) years ago, will be interesting to see your color match though for the director cut scenes as the ones I did with Dr Dre’s color matching tool (Lut) I was never happy with. The AMC one was originally open matte (1.77:1 instead of 1.85:1 like DSNP) so added black borders. I do know the direct Amzn paid version of the remaster pales in comparison to my AMC (AMZN) source as I grabbed that one directly when it appeared (updated from old master) at Amzn US and the grain etc appears filtered along with a lower bitrate (had maksnew do a full comparison between them). I also added the synced laserdisc soundtracks (with extended bits added in).

I have the one from whomever made a theatrical cut project here a couple of years ago that ended up @ 25.1 mbps with black bars (probably an upcoding from a lower bitrate) and the one I just found the other day, an AMZN @ 13 mbps cropped to 1.85 from PiRaTeS.

The PiRaTes one is the lower quality Amzn US one, like I said its filtered compared to my AMC (AMZN) source. That project you are talking about I think is the one that used my source but with custom color timing as the user felt the remaster was incorrectly tone mapped to sdr which I don’t agree with and still prefer the untouched remaster source. My AMC (AMZN) source I originally did a smart render to remove the duplicate frames (incorrect 24 fps frame rate) so as untouched as possible but had to re-encode at high bitrate (to maintain quality) to add the black borders in Premiere as had to replace the AMC commercial fades using the DSNP remaster (again not as filtered as AMZN US source but lesser quality than AMC due to lower bitrate) which has the 1.85:1 black borders.

Bitrate Comparison [from low to high PQ] (Re-capping statement):

3. PiRaTes
2. DSNP
1. AMZN

Is that correct?

Also nowadays it seems pretty hard to find the 1.78:1 Partial Matte [since it's opened a bit up] since AMC+ delisted it (or did they?)

Three ratio presentations?

1.85:1 (AMZN/Disney+)
1.78:1 (AMC+ [Delisted?])
1.33:1 (CBS/Fox or Fox Video VHS/LDs)

That's a good day in a ratio nut's book Smile

It's OK, @SwatDB. I got all the necessary and best sources available now.
The final product will be in 1.85:1 AR.

The PiRaTeS (using AMZN US Paid as source) problem is not about the bitrate, it is more filtered for some reason, My AMCP (AMZN channel) fixed one (slowed to 23.976 and duplicates removed manually using smart render followed by commercial fades replaced with DSNP source/black borders added to AMCP to match in Premiere and exported with high bitrate voukoder x264), was the best overall followed by DSNP (but that one the grain suffers slightly with lower bitrate).

I also have the untouched AMCP (AMZN) source (my own) but no point in that as it is 24fps with duplicated frames and commercial fades as well as been Open Matte.

Did you manage to check out my own dir cut project yet, Beber. I think my Dr Dre Lut made the Dir Cut bits a bit light overall.

Staying true to the Theatrical Ratio, of course Smile

I was curious and factchecking about the official availability of the high bitrate and 1.78:1 presentation.

A: Does the AMZN have higher bitrate than DSNP (I also found out there is a French iTunes presentation containing the same recent master)
B: Did AMC+ delist the 1.78:1 ratio.

Thoughts about sound mix:

The new master's 5.1 mix to my ears is the OG mix [the 2007 DC updated foley of Bennett's finger snap before "…in the blink of an eye."]) time upmixed to addtional speakers.
The JP LD has the best sounding 2.0 Stereo Mix? (or the 1992 US LD?)

Keep up the good work
Thank you Smile

AMCP (AMZN) removed it along time ago, I grabbed it quite a few years back, DSNP has less bitrate, yes. Shame back then AMCP used incorrect 24fps frame rate with duplicates along with commercial fades (which they still use). Thankfully no watermarks/logo’s. iTunes one is not good either, usual filtering. Theatrical JP P&S laserdisc is confirmed to have the best sound over all.

I'd be keen for this but with the "smash your face in" line from the theatrical cut, which I find hilarious.

Good luck with your project.
