Really insightful stuff, good work.

I decided to pick up the 2005 dvd and have synced the mono mix to the blu-ray (only needed a slight adjustment). If anyone wants the audio file just PM me

Another 16mm print has popped up in the usual bay. It's got water damage, which might keep the big bidders away.
Anybody know if this sort of damage can be treated?

I wanted to share this for folks who may be misinformed with the 7.1 mix on the BD. Some reviews imply it’s a faithful recreation of the original mono in surround which is simply not the case. Here’s the proof.

Mono

Surround (2000 mix)

Surround (2012 mix)

Note that the last two are more or less the same?? The last one has slightly better balance and it does restore Brody pumping the rifle and the ricochet but nonetheless clearly is not a surround replication of the mono.

I registered here just so I could add my 2c worth. I am one of the Brits who saw the original version in the cinema. I was only 9 or 10 at the time but I still remember it clearly. Whist I don't remember the entire scene dialog, I do remember some of the words. I was also backed up by someone form Martha's Vinyard who also remebered it.... anyway.. here is how I remember...

"So this is what happens when a young girl goes swimming..." (the person from MV said it continued "off the beaches in Amity" or something like that).
The camera pans down to see the remains in the tray, including a massive bite out of the torso iirc.
Hooper then picks up a tape measure and measures the bite. The dialog continues...
"The bite radius indicates..." which is where the only version now available as far as I know cuts back in.

When Hooper measures the mouth of the tiger shark, he says it doesn't match. Without the original scene you have to assume he's already done that - but in the version I saw, it was there and hence makes a lot more sense.

The original discovery of the body was a bit more graphic in the version I remember too.

In fact, the pan and scan for the shot of the severed arm seems to have been deliberately done to hide the gore - it rather quickly pans away as Hooper's lifting the arm up, and is completely moved over to Brody before we can actually see the severed part. It would make even less sense for the supposed additional graphic footage of the corpse to have suddenly shown up in a later broadcast (especially considering that ABC in particular had a habit of rerunning their old, fuzzy, smeary movie transfers well into the latter half of the decade), so I now consider the myth that the autopsy scene was ever extended on ABC to be conclusively debunked.

The UK prints story makes no sense to me either; the BBFC has historically tended to be *more* conservative than the MPAA, I can't imagine that a gorier autopsy would have shown up exclusively in the UK, even if it did release with an A certificate (I looked at images of posters online, they say A, not PG). And when Spielberg was interviewed by Bryan Singer for Empire magazine, he made no reference to having to cut anything graphic; he said that he and Verna Fields shortened the scene for pacing reasons, dropped in the insert of Hooper holding the arm to cover over the edit, assembled "This is what happens" from other bits of dialogue in the scene (I'm not sure what exactly that means, it doesn't *sound* like they cut together individual words from different lines, at least not to my ear) and dubbed it in over the arm shot.

Spielberg's exact quote (emphasis added by me):
Quote:I remember this very well. I had cut out a line of dialogue and inside the line of dialogue I manufactured artificially a new line: ‘This is what happens.’ Originally, he said more than that. I can’t remember what he said exactly. (Editor) Verna Fields and I pieced together, ‘This is what happens,’ from other words he was saying because the scene was too long. I was able to cut a huge — maybe 30-second — part of the scene out, simply by cutting to the insert of the arm coming up and putting the words, ‘This is what happens,’ over it.

Watching the scene again (from the same ABC airing, so it's the original mono mix) I see no abrupt cut in the picture going from the arm back to Hooper, and the only abrupt cut I hear in the sound is that "--indicates the non-frenzied feeding..." is joined in progress and there's an audible jump/dropout at the beginning of "indicates". And that's just on the dialogue element; while to my ear there may be a jump cut in the effects track, if there is it's much less abrupt, and it occurs in sync with the clean-looking picture edit, almost an entire second before Hooper's dialogue abruptly cuts back in.

I should have specified

Ah ok. My apologies. The mono on the BD isn’t bad but has it’s flaws. I’ll still take it over the overly revisionist surround remix! Wink

I’m thinking of doing another comparison video. Could someone possibly rip the mono track from the BD and send it to me??

The upcoming UHD release will have the mono in both Dolby and DTS. Be interesting to see how they differ.

Edit: I was wrong. The mono is only in DTS.

I'm assuming the new UHD will just be the same "mono" as the 2012 BD but I'll be happy to be wrong.

Looking at the '97 LD track by the way, although it's meant to be mono, the left and right channels do not contain identical data. That surprised me. I was going to make a custom 3.0 DTS-HD MA encode so that all 3 front speakers would be used but no back speakers (my centre speaker is much better than my front left and right so it gives a lot more bass response)... but it seems I can't without first doing a mixdown to actual 1.0 mono and putting that in the centre. Any idea what's going on there?
