Frankenstein (1931) Audio Preservation
Once we get this done, I get the feeling it would be both extremely beneficial and probably very revealing to try and get every available version and format of the important Uni horrors side by side and really dig into them.

Of course if we then tiptoed into Hammer-land the workload would go waaaaay into the stratosphere.

Was just gonna post in here. Amazingly this thread turned a year old last month. Yay team! Haha anyways I was curious if there had been updates on this but you beat me to the punch Jerry so thumbs up there. As usual it seems you are putting a lot of dedicated work and attention into this so thumbs up there as well. It would be neat to learn some of the techniques employed in this process as it could be insightful. As far as you not trusting anyone else with this hey I started this thread and I wouldn't trust myself with the responsibility of this type of project. Wink This is a classic film that deserves genuine care and i simply don't have the knowledge, time, and in ways willingness to give it that much care though at the same time I still wanna see it done that way. So again thumbs up!!!

I apologize for not reading through the thread; rather busy at the moment.

The master used for the DiscoVision LD was struck directly from the original nitrate negative. I have a seemingly-endless number of copies (at least 10-15). Might it be of use here?

Edit: I remember now that it's the censored version. Can we use a second source to fill-in what's missing?

Even if the audio is not useful, the video might be for a preservation on contrast/brightness of a nitrate print.

Perhaps, but one thing to keep in mind is that MCA did everything half-assed at that time. The masters were prepared against no standard. The mastering engineer just did whatever he thought looked right on the consumer set they had connected in the lab.

Luckily, according to a BlamLD review the DiscoVision disc's audio was transferred fairly decently, with a score of three stars. You can read the review here.

Jerryshadoe is the one doing the syncing for this project but I haven't heard from him for a while. I believe he said at one point he has enough resources but I guess you can never be too careful. Hopefully he'll jump back into this soon. Now that I'm close to perfecting my VHS captures I may capture the 1999 VHS. My memory is it sounded close to the 1991 VHS but had the uncensored dialogue. However the black outs between scenes on that version were shorter than the 1991 tape so that may cause problems.
