x264 BD compliant "perfect" settings
#71
OK guys, lately I finished The Thing ("Finally!") and yesterday I caught the occasion to take a look into another project - actually, even if finished, it needed some refiniment, and it was the only one, apart The Thing, into my portable HDD, so I said myself "What the... luck, let's try the new color matching"... and, incredibly, it was almost perfect, and needed just few little tweaks here and there... what film I'm talking about? Hint: a Carpenter one, with the original "The Thing (1951)" showing on TV... like a sign, perhaps?

Well, back to topic: The Thing get over its max bitrate --vbv-maxrate fixed at 40mbps, it has gone up to 42mbps, and the latest one up until almost 45mbps!

I'm pretty sure some (many?) hardware players would play them regardless, but my aim is to stay within the standard... I don't know why this happened, because when I set the average bitrate, it is precise near the few KBs...

Maybe I should lower the --vbv-maxrate to just 35000, so eventaul spikes would (hopefully) stay below 40mbps...

Opinions, thoughts?

Even using the new "limited" setting, the peak is always over 40mbps... bitrate used is 30mpbs, maybe I should lower further the vbv maxrate to the same level?

Yes, with this new PC I spare days to encode, but losing 6 hours for nothing is still a waste of time... luckily, with this new PC I could do something more in the meanwhile!

AFAIK x264 can allow peaks above max bit rate so long as the buffer size permits:

Still don't know
1) why the encoder goes so much higher
2) if an hardware player would "accept" the disk, would play the "spiked" part flawlessly, or have an "hiccup"...

Hey guys, I've not encoded with megui before, so maybe one of you can tell me what I need to do here.

I want to encode to 480p, fake interlaced, so my video can be authored to bluray. I got some setting from this page:
https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/3397...-compliant

I believe the one I need to use is

Code:
--keyint 48 --min-keyint 2 --open-gop bluray --colorprim "smpte170m" --transfer "smpte170m" --colormatrix "smpte170m" --sar 10:11 --fake-interlaced --pic-struct --pulldown 32

I'm just usure how to implement these settings. I've been messing around for a while and getting nowhere.

They seems OK, but to get a confirmation just ask to experts.

You can input them in the Simple X264 launcher, if you want a simpler way to encode it; just delete eventual commands not accepted by the program.

I've been testing a clip with the "480P BD" preset and the output is 59.94 fps instead of the 23.976 I'm inputting. Any idea what the issue could be? I've tried another preset and the fps was not affected.

Edit: So it turns out the muxer was set to the incorrect fps. Derp.

Can anyone tell me how to adjust the script for 1080i25-material to get a Blu-ray-compatible output? Smile

First post edited with new settings (not that much different than old ones, by the way), and some hints that could be useful.

Now it would be great to know which is the best x264 version to use.
