Hong Kong films-where to find information on the best versions
Posted by: captainsolo - 2021-11-03, 11:16 PM - Forum: Movies, TV shows and other - Replies (30)

I recently stumbled across some HK films on laserdisc in the wild and found myself again wondering if there is a place or area to find definitive listings of which editions are worthwhile or best to watch. I’ve been tempted to buy rare John Woo releases in the hope of finding better audio or other elements but you never quite know if the transfer will be worth it or if the film is uncut.

I find myself wondering if I should have gotten all the discs the store had but some were just one part of a film and some were edited versions according to their lddb info. Some were analog audio only which I try to avoid unless necessary.

If anyone knows certain lds to be on the lookout for let me know so I can add them to my list.

Hey, everyone! I'm kidjupiter92 (you can call me Jupiter). I'm a 28 (soon to be 29) year old aspiring filmmaker and storyteller, who lives in the good ol' state of New York of the USA. I've been a faneditor for a few years now, and started making the rounds in the fanedit community on originaltrilogy.com and fanedit.org. I brought to this site recently after my last string of projects starting going toward the fan preservation and restoration side of things over making instead of fanfixing and extended editions.

My current projects are a HD remaster of the Troy Theatrical Cut, an HD reconstruction of the Director's Cut of Oliver Stone's Alexander, and an HD reconstruction of the Japanese cuts of Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2.

Just wanted to introduce myself and see how everyone's doing? I hope to see ya'll around here and get to know as many of you as I can. Hopefully pick a few brains on projects and help out in anyway I can too. Thanks for dropping by!

  Dc3up™ (Audio source combination)
Posted by: Mediahead - 2021-11-03, 01:59 AM - Forum: Restoration guides - Replies (6)

I have no idea what I am saying, or if this would even work well, but I had an idea of combining two audio sources to maybe increase quality. I was inspired by spoRv's PaNup to maybe combine the signals of both a decoded lossy AC3 and DTS track from the same DVD(or LD) and combine them to make something a bit less lossy, for editing purposes. (Mainly standards conversion through speeding up or slowing down. )

I wonder what people's thoughts are on this, or if I am completely crazy ?

Jumanji (1995) Stereo mix & isolated score synced to 4K/Blu-ray
Posted by: Peanut32 - 2021-11-01, 11:38 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (1)

I simply took the stereo mix and isolated score from the old DVD and synced it to the remastered Blu-ray. So it should sync with the 4K release as well, as they were released simultaneously (and bundled) and have the same length. Only difference is the Blu-ray has a 5.1 track and the 4K a 7.1.

I don't know if this was originally released in stereo only, but the 5.1 and 7.1 tracks sound really good actually. The stereo mix has a 'advantage' in that it isn't as loud. Last time i watched it (in 5.1) trough my speakers i needed to adjust the volume constantly when the movie got loud. I guess it could be ideal if you live alone with no neighbors to be found... : )

I converted the stereo track to .wav and the isolated score (which is in 5.1) to .flac with a optional AC3 640kbps file for convenience if you don't want it in flac.

Let me know if you would be interested!

  Hook (1991) Stereo mix synced to 4K & Blu-ray
Posted by: Peanut32 - 2021-11-01, 11:06 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (2)

I took the stereo mix from the first DVD release of 'Hook' and synced it to the 4K release and the original Blu-ray release, since they both have their pros and cons.
There was one tiny edit difference between those two releases near the last third of the film which resulted in having to create two different audio files, one for each.

When you equalize the volume with both the 5.1 and 7.1 remix i still think this stereo mix sounds better. Especially the dialogue in many scenes sounds clearer and John Williams' great score is much better mixed with the rest of the sfx. I even read someone thought the score was also buried too deep in the new 7.1 Atmos remix.

Ironic how a 256kbps AC3 file can sound better than a modern 7.1 Atmos mix. Bit that's just my opinion. Let me know if you want to check it out for yourself!

Christine (1983) Stereo mix synced to 4K
Posted by: Peanut32 - 2021-11-01, 10:46 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (2)

Not a movie i particularly love. But it's good fun.

I actually think the DTS-HD MA 2.0 track is a downmix of the 5.1 track on the 4K release. Because when i compared it to the stereo mix from the DVD i noticed in a few scenes there were less engine roars than on the 4K 2.0 track. And in some scenes the score by John Carpenter is also less buried in the mix on the DVD than on the 2.0 track on the 4K release. It's also slightly less noise reduced which is a win in my book!

I converted it to a 16-bit .wav file
Just let me know if you're interested : )

The 'Burbs (1989) Stereo mix synced to Arrow Blu-ray
Posted by: Peanut32 - 2021-11-01, 10:23 PM - Forum: Released - No Replies

"God I love this street!"

I think this movie looks fantastic on the Arrow Blu-ray release. The booklet that comes with it says 'The soundtrack was mastered from the original audio elements by NBCUniversal StudioPost'. But when comparing it with the AC3 stereo track from the first DVD release it doesn't sound that good. It's not just noise reduction. It generally sounds like it's from a different source. The AC3 file sounds much brighter and more detailed. Especially the great and fun music by Jerry Goldsmith!

I LOVE this movie!! So i wanted to sync it to the best Blu-ray release this movie has.
I converted it to a 16-bit .wav file and syncs perfectly now : )

Speed (1994) Stereo mix synced to 4K/Blu-ray
Posted by: Peanut32 - 2021-11-01, 09:40 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (5)

I took the stereo mix from the first DVD release of 'Speed' and synced it to the 4K release. A very different mix compared to the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track. I guess it comes down to preference which sounds better to you.

It should sync to the remastered BD as well.
I converted it to a 16-bit .wav file.

Let me know if you're interested.

Video French Cancan (1955) (Custom colour & Hybrid audio)
Posted by: mitkrod - 2021-11-01, 03:26 AM - Forum: Released - Replies (3)

Overview:
French Cancan is my favourite of all Renoir’s films. Unfortunately, the most recent restoration by Gaumont suffers from the usual teal leanings and is very murky.

I’ve attempted to colour correct the footage to have a more neutral white balance, using the earlier DVDs as reference, as I believe this is how Renoir would have intended the film to be seen. I corresponded with one of the film's most ardent defenders, Tag Gallagher, who was able to back up the assertion that this is how the film's colour would have originally appeared.

I have also boosted the shadows on the restoration to improve on the murky look it has (although there’s only so far this can be pushed). The old Criterion DVD has its colour issues too, looking too green in parts, and yet other sections look like they’ve been ‘over corrected’ with regard to white balance.

For the audio, I found that the Australian Madman DVD had *marginally* more intact high end frequencies than the Blu-Ray and so I’ve synced it to the recent restoration. I’ve also included the Blu-Ray track though as they’re fairly similar. Neither track is superb, but they do fine. The old Criterion DVD is more muffled.

For subtitles, I’ve included the BFI translation in both srt and vobsub format, as well as an srt of the translation on the Gaumont Blu-Ray. Chapters are also included.

Video:

  • The 2011 BFI Blu-Ray colour corrected via Lumetri Color in Adobe Premiere Pro

Audio:
  • The 2010 Australian Madman DVD synced to the 2011 BFI Blu-Ray 1.0 FLAC
  • The 2011 BFI Blu-Ray audio track 1.0 FLAC

Screenshots (2004 Criterion DVD, 2011 BFI Blu-Ray, Custom colour regrade):

The above images here are an example where the 2004 Criterion DVD would seem to have been overcorrected, in an earlier wide shot we see that this window setting is much bluer than it is shown in close-up on the DVD.

The above is an example of where the 2011 Blu-Ray restoration appears much too dark.

What's next:

I'm hoping this might be the first of many such fan restorations I undertake, particularly of French cinema which seems to have suffered so much in terms of these teal/gold transfers. Next I hope to look at Demy's The Young Girls of Rochefort, and the most recent transfers of some of Eric Rohmer's work.
