  Hi Everyone
Posted by: apzlsoxk - 2021-05-30, 01:59 AM - Forum: Presentation - Replies (2)

Hi,

I've been lurking for a minute, figured once I made an account I should introduce myself.

I'm in grad school working on software development for nuclear data analysis. I'm not particularly creative on the editing and colorgrading side of things, but I'm hoping to be able to develop some tools to improve restoration ability, I find a lot of current software tools to be a bit lacking particularly in terms of GPU utilization. Open source tools with much better hardware utilization or better optimizations do tend to be available for a lot of EULA-type software, but they're just not always the easiest to get running.

On another note, I keep seeing that some projects are posted in "the usual places" and I'm assuming that means some torrent sites, but I can't for the life of me find which ones. I've only got a torrentleech account, so I'm at a bit of a loss when it comes to where to look. I read the rules so I know explicit pirating is against the rules and it doesn't seem like discussions regarding torrenting sites is banned, so I hope I'm not breaking any rules by asking about this.

Thanks, I'm just happy to be here. Smile

  Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) 35mm Int'l Trailer Scanning
Posted by: snicketary - 2021-05-29, 01:58 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (9)

Hello all,

I am entirely new to this so I apologize in advance if this the wrong place for this, but I recently acquired the International Trailer for "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" from 2004 on 35mm film. As a bonus, quite a bit of it is Open Matte. See examples below:

As you can see I've been able to get decent stills for reference, but I'd love to get it scanned to a high quality digital format. I've got no idea how to go about doing that or where to go that would take the project on, so I thought I'd try here and see if anyone could point me in the right direction. I'd prefer not to build my own scanner or buy one as this is really a one-off project for me. Not worth the investment in a scanner at the present time.

Let me know if you can help or know anyone who can! Love the work you guys do.

  Hello, BD remastering

I removed artifacts from the BD "Die Pest in Florenz" (1919)

How popular is such a restoration?
In which forum thread can I ask such a question?
Which startup can you take part in?

Yours faithfully,

  The Stranger
Posted by: MANIAC - 2021-05-28, 09:36 AM - Forum: Released - No Replies

Years ago I made a fan edit of Eyes of a Stranger (1981)
I was from DVD and I waited for years for a Blu-ray release
Finally, they released the Blu-ray some time ago and I remade this '80 slasher to a 61-minute cut
One of my favorites with (brief) make-ups effects by Tom Savini
Savini was very busy in the '80s with his makeup effects like in The Burning, The Prowler, Friday the 13th
For the people who know the original of Eyes of a Stranger, I removed some unbelievable stuff like the escape of Lauren Tewes from the apartment of the killer
Also, the friend of Tewes is completely cut-out, unnecessary character for this edit.
John Disanti is outstanding in his role as the cold-blooded killer
I converted the sound in a DTS 5.1 track and from today it's online on my site
Another title: simply called The Stranger

Mortal Kombat (1995) Open Matte composite
Posted by: CORTICALSYSTEMS - 2021-05-25, 06:39 PM - Forum: In progress - Replies (10)

Hey friends,

Thought I would take a stab at an open matte version using the FS DVD and 1080p blu ray. (detail preserving upscale on the SD footage > match colour to blu ray > reposition cuts )

I can't for the life of me figure out the avisynth script method to creating open mattes and the test below was made by hand with about 1 days work. I initially even tried exporting all frames and running a custom action in Photoshop to align layers but it didn't work as intended.

Audio is obviously temp so ignore that but open to hearing thoughts about proceeding and if anyone knows any other sources I should be using. To the best of my knowledge I haven't seen any HD broadcasts online with more picture information. Not all shots in the FS dvd are open so the plan is to just occasionally cut to the WS blu when needed (probably very few shots). But you can see that in my test below.

Test (if this small portion isn't allowed under the rules let me know and I'll remove, thanks!):

  Amityville 3-D - Aligned
Posted by: Nick_M - 2021-05-25, 11:19 AM - Forum: Released - Replies (2)

The Shout Factory BD of Amityville 3-D (1983) has a fine transfer (of an alternate version) that maintains the flaws that you'd see in an original 35mm print. Namely, it keeps the alignment errors that are part of the original photography. I aligned each shot to minimize vertical parallax, making the 3D easier on the eyes.

If anyone has access to the original titles and effects shots that are missing on this disc, I'd be up for revising this.

Source: Shout Factory BD

Available as a frame-packed 3D BD. Must provide blanks, postage, and proof of purchase. PM for details.

[LIST] DVDs with both widescreen and open matte versions
Posted by: Stamper - 2021-05-21, 07:42 PM - Forum: Official and unofficial releases - Replies (19)

So I browsed a bit the web, to no avail.

I like to collect DVDs that are either dual sided, or DVD-9, holding both widescreen and open matte versions of films.

Most of those were released in the early days of DVD from 1997 on.

Anyone could help build a more complete list by contributing, please feel free to post titles here.

Some of those I come across:

- Batman
- Batman Returns
- Batman Forever
- Batman & Robin
- Bronco Billy (actually it's cropped on the sides)
- Cobra
- The Crow (2 disc set)
- Dark City
- Dr No
- Evil Dead 2
- The Exorcist
- Fantastic 4: Rise Of The Silver Surfer
- From Russia With Love
- Goldeneye (Pan & Scan side)
- Goldfinger
- Hang'Em High
- Hellraiser
- Hellraiser 2
- Jumper
- Last Action Hero
- Memphis Belle
- Men In Black
- Nightmare on Elm Street (all 7 of them)
- Payback
- Resident Evil: Apocalypse
- The Specialist
- Speed
- Starman
- Super Speedway
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- Total Recall

Don't hesitate to add. Also feel free to point cases like Bronco Billy, where they cropped the sides instead of open-matting.

Photo The Tall Man
Posted by: MANIAC - 2021-05-21, 01:01 AM - Forum: In progress - Replies (2)

The Tall Man.

My first project here, but on my blog, it will be number 114.
I started this project a few months ago but at the same time, I was working on the Hannibal TV show edits.
That was a lot of work, so I did that first
So the project was going back on the self, and next week I put my hands on it again to finish it.
It's a two in one edition of Phantasm, Phantasm Oblivion, and some inserts of Phantasm II
The first idea was to do a two in one edition of Phantasm and Phantasm II but that didn't work because the part of Mike was done by another actor
Somehow it didn't work for me so I had to do something else with it
It's gonna be a two hours cut, in DTS 7.1 surround taking from blu-ray source, and somewhere in June it's done

  DNR-free The Two Towers
Posted by: You_Too - 2021-05-20, 11:08 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (9)

I've been getting back into the LOTR trilogy lately and thanks to 44rh1n and Dwalin there are now options for both the first and second part of the trilogy.
(Although I know of a method that one could use to get a perfect color grading of the extended shots, but sadly I'm too ill and tired to work with such a project)

Now back on topic: You all probably know the Theatrical Blu-ray of TTT has tons of DNR. The sad part is the Extended version is also plagued by this in lots of scenes with smearing artifacts. It is so visible in outdoor scenes like when Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are chasing the orchs that it sticks out like a sore thumb in this majestic trilogy.

I was wondering if there are any old HDTV broadcasts or Web-DL versions or similar, of either the Theatrical or Extended version of TTT that are free from this DNR?
Here are a few links to screenshots of the Extended version of TTT, taken from an own encode of mine where I got rid of the black bars on the sides:
(Tried to find a good lossless image sharing website, not sure if this one's any good)

2002-The-Two-Towers-mkv-snapshot-02-30-46-080.png (1920×804) (ibb.co)

As you can see, in some of these shots there's not just smearing but also halo artifacts and similar.
I want to know if there is any version free of this?
At the same time I kinda don't expect there to be one, seeing how they took this master and upscaled and put even more DNR on top of it for the 4K release!
Of course, that could just have been the good old laziness of movie companies, rather using automatic software without doing any quality control at all.

Thanks in advance and see ya later film fans!
