[Canceled] Terminator 2 (Theatrical Cut) (35 Project #4)
#31
A good article here with some seriously blue 70mm and 35mm frames:

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/columns/hi...5th/Page-2

Good detail there about the showcase sound mixes as well. Is Buster D's PCM considered a good approximation of the Dolby SR?

IMO there should be only 1 audio track (LD pcm 2.0) and reserve the rest of the bitrate for the video, being such a long movie and all. Assuming this is going to be a BD25. People can easily mux in what they want later.

Love the regrade so far, the blue is definitely a look that Cameron loves to use in his films.

Point of curiosity: if you are going to include a remixed track, why not use the the full bitrate DTS-HD MA?  Is it a matter of aiming to fit the movie onto a BD-25?

Thanks for the hard work to everyone involved!  Looks, and I'm sure sounds, fantastic!

You are right on the money, I'm looking at space saving and adding another lossless track might start cutting into the video (within the 25 limit I set for myself). And since the CDS tracks are lossy, it would at least be consistent.

The Japanese laserdisc used for the audio track is the squeezed version we are talking about in the other thread? If not, I suggest to use it instead (or add it to the list), as it seems the mix is closest to the theatrical one.

No I believe its a pre-squeeze LD PILF-0001 or PILF-1375. Don't have my notes at the moment. I also have video capped from another LD (with blue tint intact) but its analog sound. Buster D has consistently done great soundtrack caps for me but I'll take any soundtrack for comparison's sake.

I'm currently watching the 35mm film cell auctions, they should be over in a couple of days (I also bagged an Aliens strip as well).
This project is looking great, can't wait to see it! I'm also strangely curious about the 3D conversion. I know it will probably be opened up to 16:9 with cropped (and possibly re rendered) VFX, but I was too young to watch T2 in the theatre and the chances of catching it in 35/70mm are slim these days.

Yep synced to the Blu. The 2015 Lionsgate to be specific. I debated adding back the Tri-star logo but abandoned that so people can sync foreign tracks and subs.

Love to see those cells if you are willing to share. Didn't know the 3D release was going 16:9. Super 35 keeps giving.

And here is the same pic from my regrade

BD/Regrade

Its important to note, the fist pic looks like on set blue lights for highlights and fills and maybe gells. But the second looks like the first with blue (chemical) color timing added.

I hope the PCM is the SR since lddb says it should be....the track might need a slight DB boost to match the others.

T-1000 stepping out of the fire was filmed at twilight, now it looks bland, and there's no more reflection of the burning fire on the T-800 face on the bike with the kid (they used a reflector for that effect, also shot at twilight).
Also you're now burning the whites (first example, the explosion)
However in scenes like the lift, you improved the color and it now looks right.
Remember it should look like a film print, not video.
Any time the faces look naturaly lit, it looks like video. Films print give that orangey look that isn't supposed to look like real life, since it's film.
Most remasters get it wrong because the grading guys color the faces to look like in real life. From then on, they destroy the whole look of the film.

Can you explain what you mean by burning the whites, Stamper? I don't understand. Are we talking highlights here?

All I can say about the canal chase is I used one color grade for it and it is consistent with the 35mm pics and LD cap I have (sorry no pics for that, its on a HDD at home right now):

And that the sunset look only appears in the next scene; John and the Terminator riding of the bike and then parking in the alley to talk.

As for the orange-y skin tones I agree but all the sources I have show T2 with only Caucasian skin tones: pale white, blue or purple-ish. Maybe wrong but far, far from natural. In fact the BD's skin tones look a lot more orange then the sources I can see.

You're right, at 137mins it's a big ask for a BD25. At least it's scope so the black bars help maximize the bits. I'd probably say you're safe with the Dolby Surround PCM track and the Live DVD's AC3 (which was verified by Disclord as the CDS mix). The Japanese DTS would be the icing on the cake if space permitted.

Hi again,

Here's a quick and dirty frame from my 35mm strip:
http://www.imagebam.com/image/a05771523775072
I literally backlit it with an old lightbox and took a picture on my smartphone. When I have gathered up some more I may look into getting them scanned for archival.
Regarding the 3D it's not definite that it will be 16:9 but judging how Avatar and Titanic went down in 3D it's a safe bet, especially how he has the image to work with from the super35 frame.

Oh I get it, the original Blu-ray have clipped (burned) whites in some shots.
Upon looking at the cells, I say the look's good, it just take a while to get use to some shots, so ingrained the LD/BR master is in our eyes!

Very generous, thanks Zoidberg.

If alternate audio tracks are not included in the MKV, will you at least share them in separate files? I like to have the option.

If by alternate you mean the surround EX /lossless DTS-HD tracks they are on every blu release since skynet. The laserdisc PCM/ CDS 5.1 tracks are obviously scarcer hence their inclusion on this project.

Yeah I'm more focused on the Dolby SR/CDS track mixes then the Rydstrom re-mix but I'm going to try to squeeze everything in possible. I'm still shooting for the one PCM (DS-SR), one DD (CDS), one DTS (CDS) and the remix in regular DTS. I figure maybe about 3 to 4 GB for that (if my math is right)

My goal is always to try to keep the video to a minimum of 20 Mbps. The only time I couldn't get that was The Good, The Bad and the Ugly which was too long to get that rate even with only one track but this might get close.

Regardless, T2's color timing is done. I added in some more purple during the night scenes which multiple sources confirm is suppose to be there but I've avoided in the past. I'm going to render this weekend and then sync the audio. If anyone wants to help preview the file to check for errors, please let me know. I'm going to create a test file to watch before final render.
