Done A LOT of tests yesterday - and this night as well... HDTV regrade is good, but far from perfect, so I've moved the focus to BD; I tried to be as closer as possible to film, but at the same time taking some advantage of the BD master.

That looks really nice.

That's great, I notice you lose the orangey look of the 35mm and the fleshtones are now looking more accurate even if the picture is stylised.

Thanks! I didn't yet because unfortunately, during the encoding process I've made the file interlaced... so I was quite ashamed of that and it would be time consuming as hell to redo it. It's not disturbing though, unless you're skipping through the movie. Doesn't change the quality so if you're still interested I can definitely create a topic and find a way to make it available for everyone here

I'd definitely be interested in your custom regrade. I'm in the camp with those who feel that the 35mm scan doesn't accurately reflect how the Matrix looked theatrically. I accept that perhaps that particular print looks that way for whatever reason but it just doesn't look like I remember the film looking. I accept that 1999 was a long time ago but I remember the look of the movie leaving quite an impression on me. I'm certain I would not have felt that way had it been bathed in all that yellow, almost sepia in some scenes.

The colours in your regrade just look more right to me.

as this is a test clip, of course there are problems...

1. first few frames are wrong
   
2. there are some frames with white random pixels on black background
   
3. sometimes the matching goes nuts - like in the torchlight shot, first frames
   
4. sometimes the image "glows"
   

overall, it's a nice experiment, it gives you a "film feeling" somehow...

The new colors definitely look much better. Someone should probably invent a color space where saturation is more constant across different brightnesses.

The clip has lots of artifacts and banding though. Banding could probably be solved with grain plate, but the artifacts are bad, especially the ones where highlights turn out black, like in the blinking cursor in the beginning. Am I right assuming this happened because the overlay wasn't perfect? Maybe that new overlay plugin could help with that?

I like the 35mm scan but something does not sit with me also.

It is just a test after all Tom. SpoRv puts a lot of work into these projects. I don't think he even sleeps!

Not sure about the new colour space but it needs a name to sell it. FanresColour anyone?
