Track 1 shows as 32bit on my file, maybe that's why the media player is struggling.

Another great project PDB, I don't know how you do it

Really, well that must be the problem. Let me fix it.

Thanks Zoidberg

That would certainly do it!

Yep, 32bit. That's what's unusual. And it gives a very high bitrate for a PCM stereo track.

I love this. Thank you again, PDB, for all of your hard work in putting this together!!

Having burned all three versions to disc, I went a little bit nuts and created a 3-disc sleeve, which I'd be glad to share (regular members can PM me for the link). It's based on a pretty simple envelope design, but there's cutting and gluing involved, so I'll try to include some instructions and maybe a couple of photos to show how it all fits together.

I'd be interested to hear any observations regarding the audio variations (if any) between these tracks.

The providence of the mix on Alien '95 is well documented, but the contemporary Aliens disc (from which I captured the PCM and Zoidberg the AC-3) is less well-understood. I've tended to assume it's the 6-track mix, since that seems the most likely route for a studio to take to LD 5.1 in that era. But I don't think anything official has ever been stated.

Ok here is the replacement in both 48/16 and 44.1/16 for you to choose:

Is the problem the surround flags (as in, encoding as Lt+Rt rather than L+R), or is it the fact it's DTS rather than Dolby and they'd be expecting Pro Logic, or something else entirely? I might switch to straight PCM, but the sheer volume of tracks I'm encoding / archiving means I'd prefer Lt+Rt .dtshd. Plus, it means my own receiver knows (without me having to tell it) that the audio is matrixed and will decode it back to surround by default.

It's a bunch of things; some personal preferences, some electronics.

In all likelihood converting to DTS MA 2.0 won't break the matrixing. I've used it before and it has been fine. But I prefer, for say LDs, to keep the chain PCM all the way through if possible as to not add another layer of decoding.

If it were discrete PCM 5.1, then the savings that DTS MA provides is too much to avoid but with PCM 2.0 the savings trade off is not worth it to me.

But concerning electronics part, pretty much every receiver made from about early 90s to now, every off the shelf DAC even the cheap ones, every system using Toslink will do PCM 2.0.

Also, I like to use old Dolby Pro Logic or several non-Dolby matrix decoders I have (my Shures, Fosgate, Involve, etc) that only work with analog and that chain is easier with PCM 2.0 then adding in the DTS.

The feel on the tracks is slightly different. There were no sound effects differences that I heard. The P&S did seem to be missing small bits occasionally at what I assume were the reel changes.

The P&S did feel like the music was buried in the mix a bit versus dialogue/sounds but overall it felt more balanced between the elements. The THX, on the other hand, did feel "bassier" and slightly more bombastic with it's music.

One thing I did notice was from Ripley going after Newt till the end seems to be a little brickwalled on the THX and comparatively lower but more balanced on the P&S.

The THX 5.1 feels similar to the DTS MA 5.1 of the BD but a bit more robust while the 4.1 and P&S PCM feel a little different but not necessarily similar.

But that is just me, I'd love to hear what others think.

Mega seems to be slowing down their bandwidth again and putting longer holds back on. I've noticed it with some of my downloads.
