Buena Vista Pictures Title - Missing Extended Versions
#1
I was making a list of future projects I wanted to do and kept seeing the same name come up - Buena Vista Pictures. Looks like they have a habit of only releasing theatrical editions of movies on blu ray that have extended/director's cuts on DVD, especially 90s movies.

Con Air
Gone In 60 Seconds
Crimson Tide
Enemy Of The State
Pearl Harbor
Tombstone (DC already done by PDB)

Am I missing any more?

Also oddly the blu rays for several of them feature 5.1 LPCM audio which I don't think I've ever seen with other distributors. Must take up a massive amount of space compared to TrueHD or DTS-HD. Anyway I read a couple of reviews, particular for Con Air and Gone in 60, where the reviewer mentioned the audio seemed off in places, particularly directionally during action scenes etc. So I'm beginning to wonder if they've been remixed for blu. Or maybe that's how they were theatrically?

Looking around I can see:

Con Air - Laserdisc as AC3 and DTS - AC3 is very cheap and DTS very expensive
Gone In 60 Seconds - never on Laserdisc - maybe Cinema DTS track?
Crimson Tide - Laserdisc as AC3 and DTS - AC3 is very cheap and DTS very expensive
Enemy Of The State - Laserdisc but very expensive, seems to be quite a rare one
Pearl Harbor - never on Laserdisc - maybe Cinema DTS track?

Anyone got any of these? Or know if Cinema DTS tracks are available? For Con Air and Crimson Tide I'm happy to pick up the laserdiscs and gift them to anyone who can capture them.

Thanks

The AC-3 on the original DVD releases of Crimson Tide, Enemy Of The State, and Con-Air are most likely the same master used for the Laserdisc versions

Unfortunately, the Extended version is a Non-Anamorphic transfer. The transfer was the same as the Standard version.

The director's cut of Armageddon was anamorphic on the UK PAL DVD release. At the time it was a very nice transfer.
It's never wise to automatically assume the DVD mixes are the same as the LDs, most DVDs were 5.1 only (no 2.0) which Dolby mandated had to be remixed in order to downmix satisfactorily for backwards compatibility, in most cases this trashed the rear soundstage. Even DVDs with 5.1 and 2.0 tracks lacked the teeth of the LDs.
Quite a few of the very early blus from Touchstone/BV and Sony have PCM multichannel tracks. Don't know if that was down to license fees or some other reason.

I guess I've got the option of using that if there is nothing else, but ideally I'd like to get the LD audio. For the cheaper titles it's not too much of a problem, but for Enemy of the State I might be struggling.

Of course completely missed that one! Thanks.

Thanks I'll put that on the list, pretty sure I have that UK DVD somewhere. I'd much prefer the LD tracks where possible, I might even keep an eye out for a cheap player to see if I can set up a capture station myself one day.

Thanks Rob that would be great at some point. I don't want to bother you for it just yet as I'm a way away from working on it, but I'll be in touch when I'm ready to go. Cheers

The JP DTS DVD has already been ripped, as has the US LD's PCM and AC-3, for Tom's 35mm regrade project. I believe the Cinema DTS was also included.
I finally got a copy of the DTS LD cheap last year during the first lockdown, haven't sampled it yet though. But when little gems like that pop up you have to pounce

That's a nice score on the DTS LD. I didn't realise Tom had done a project, I searched fanres for Armageddon but I saw the title of his project and thought it was a restoration of the trailer! Smile

Thinking about it, as it will be a restoration of the DC, I guess the best option is the Criterion LD audio, which unfortunately is another expensive one. So maybe one of the tracks that Tom used with fillers added from the Criterion DVD/UK DVD. Looks like the Criterion and UK DVDs use different sound mixes so maybe the video from the UK and the audio from the Criterion.
