[Released] The Shining (1980) - Zemastered Edition

I wonder if Warner will do it at some point (maybe to cash in on another anniversary) - no guarantees though so really appreciate your efforts given this is the version I grew up with.

I’ve never actually seen this version all the way though, I was going to set up a watch party with a few friends who like The Shining and they’ve never seen the IC either!

I finally synced up the amazing trailer done by BFI to fit for this project like I wanted to do more than a year ago.
The 4K master will be uploaded once the International Cut is all the way up.

The Shining: Zemastered Edition - International Cut v1.0

Project Description:
Quote:
This is a synced version of my Zemastered project to the International Cut Blu-ray. This uses a slightly updated version that does a contrast shift and restore some highlights in the opening credits. (This will not be released as the regular project.) This project is being presented in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. I have no plans at all to make a 1.66:1 version of this project.

Audio Options:
Quote:
All of these tracks have 3 custom edits done by me to make things flow better in my opinion, I was not matching to the 5.1 surround sound mix so it is slightly different. Both the 1991 LD and 1999 DVD mono have been synced to this project, along with the surround sound mixes for English, French, German and Spanish. There is also a "purist" mix of the 1999 DVD mono that only includes the fade out when the "Closing Day" card appears.

You did a great job narth, thanks. However, after a quick glance, I noticed a few problems.
The fade out during the Closing Day card doesn't sound to me exactly like the original one. I believe it was shorter, or it occured a bit earlier.
The cut after Jack's line "I'm right behind you" occurs a bit too late, so that the fourth clash in the music track (Penderecki's Utrenja) is heard.
After the cut to Wendy running outside the hotel (before embracing Danny) there is clipping in the soundtrack which shouldn't be there - although the original music editing was indeed abrupt here as it was in other instances of the international cut.
Obviously, as per the longer cut, the opening credits are not the original ones, having been recreated, and their color is different (more turquoise than azure), while the Warner logo is jerky.

Well as the audio is concerned, if you read my thread I did not follow the international mix as a guide. I cut to the video strictly, and audio was worried about afterwards. With the opening credits, they are exactly the same as the original cut. I did no cuts until after the opening credits.

Yes, I understand that, but the video (and audio) cut after Jack's line "I'm right behind you" occurs a bit too late. In the IC some frames of Jack were cut out, while you cut only the scene with Wendy in the lobby. The inconsistency in the soundtrack is a consequence. Since you put so much effort in releasing this edition I thought that you would have liked to make it as accurate as possible, both in video and audio terms.

What I meant regarding the opening credits is that in the UHD edition you used they are not the original 1980 ones, and their color is inaccurate. Therefore, your custom edition unfortunately retains such a flaw, although being all in all better than the official release.

I didn't notice the cut frames that you are referring too, a image/video example would be incredibly helpful. I followed the IC cut frame by frame as close as I could, so either you are wrong or the IC Blu-ray cut is. As for the opening credits, I don't have the original footage behind the credits and I wasn't willing to resort to upscaling and trying to piece a template together, so there's nothing that I can do while keeping the quality. If you would like to attempt that by all means do.

I checked and I was partly wrong. Your video cut after Jack's line "I'm right behind you" is correct, however the audio cut is not. This means that when they shortened the film they didn't simply leave the audio as it was but they edited it further, supposedly anticipating the sound of the following scene in order to cancel the fourth "rattle" from Penderecki's Utrenja without leaving the soundtrack empty.

The clipping I hear after the last scene cut out (Jack wandering in the maze) may depend on the fact that you left one or two frames that shouldn't have been there (consider that the last frame of Danny and the first of Wendy were removed): I tried to cut it myself according to an official European release and there seems to be no clipping.

A similar clipping occurs when the plane appears. No clipping should be heard here. Maybe they sweetened the audio to avoid it.

The English mono created by TheHutt for his German version sounds more like the original music track of the International cut (my references are the Italian LD soundtrack and the German soundtrack used by TheHutt).

Looking at all these great fan restorations is just... wow! They look so good!
"Even better than the official releases!" (when will the Warner Bros. ever learn...) Smile

When I first heard & saw your work-in-progress, I was intrigued. Then years later, I come back to see that you've actually done it! It really got me surprised! Nice!
(P.S. i had sent you a little M.P. for something.)
