You being able to settle is fine, others have higher standards, it's why this entire forum exists.

I could be wrong but I took this as a joke, Stamper was just repeating back what I said.

Yeah, I was just playing around LOL.

The only thing that worries me, is that those release starts a new trend in the 4K format where every old film shot in 35mm, just gets it's 15 years old scan for Blu-ray tarted up with A.I. and upscaled to 4K. This could spell the end of the format, because not every film released as the JC aura.

Does anyone know how this older release (from which are the screenshots below):
The.Abyss.1989.1080p.AMZN.WEB-DL.DDP5.1.H.264-Curly.mkv
compares to the newer UHD/Web releases?
Because I see some grain in that one. Maybe it's better than the current masters?

I think it's probably the 2014 version of the scan from AMZN streaming. According to YouTube videos, The Abyss 4K is a mix of this scan + probably some parts rescanned in 2019 (including the SE scenes).

I see.
But my main concern was, has this old scan been DNRed further for the new releases?

That's my ultimate concern also.

The color timing really differ, the new version is better in some parts, lesse in others.

Check out this video, which is pretty inclusive:

A new 4k/8k scan isn't cheap or easy.
I'm wondering if this was just a studio attempt to save money, turn a profit, and then use the profit to do a real UHD scan in the future so they can sell the movies again.

They do 4k scans for some terrible horror (usually) B-movies and they couldn't do it for these Cameron films?
I can't believe that.
